1. While completing the activity I discovered that there are many, many policies put in place when it comes to childcare. Definitely more than people realize.

2. I would not say that I was surprised by any of the WAC’s. When it comes to keeping other people’s children safe it makes total sense that all those precautions, rules, and licenses/trainings are needed.

3. I can definitely see how the WAC’s influence every day life working at a childcare center, especially with all the records you need for each child. I think that keeping all the WAC’s in mind while I work is good though, because it’s a way to keep my center a lot more structured.

1. I discovered that the WACs provide a lot more detail in a wide variety of subjects pertaining to childcare. I think it very thoroughly covers every angle of information and answers all questions you could need to refresh.

2. I was actually surprised at how much detail and information I would take in. It was very helpful and educating.

3. I absolutely see how knowing the WACs will make me a better caregiver for young children. They made every subject very clear, I feel it was very thought out and educating.

2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs? No, as many of them made a lot of since to me. They help programs stay informed and on top of things.
3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? Absolutely! You have to truly understand the WACs to know what is required of you. Many of the WACs are not just for the center director to understand, it is also for the staff as a whole.

1) I discovered that the WAC’s are much more detailed then I had thought them to me, and it’s very organized and everything is clear and understandable ( reflects to creating a better and safe space for children to learn and explore.

2) I was surprised how in depth the WAC’s are. Also I found some WAC’s that I was not expecting to see such as animal regulations ( it’s amazing).

3) Yes, because because I can see how knowing these will make me a better educator or caregiver for young children.

1. I learned that there are a lot of requirements that need to be followed in order to be compliant with the standards for Washington state.
2. 110-300-0100 General Staff Qualifications and 110-300-0111 Staff Oversight surprised me.
3. I can see that the WACS can be helpful in the day-to-day practice of caring for children. They help set the expectations.

I already had set expectations of receiving a lot of information in regards to guidelines, but what I didn’t expect was the timelines. What I discovered was how each provider and their employees have to complete certain training and certificates by a certain time frame. However, I can see why this is crucial as it keeps the provider and their employees on top of their positions. As this will give parents and children the tools they need to be reassured and successful.

I discovered that the WACs are very thorough and they even have a section dedicated to the definition of terms to make following them more clear.

I was not aware that Assistant Teachers also must have an ECE certificate within 5 years of employment. It is very helpful to know that.

The WACs ensure safety and health of all children and explain child care in specific ways for this sake. Knowing that the WACs were designed for the optimum care of all children, I understand that following them will help create a beneficial environment where each child has the best care they can possibly receive from the program.

   – I learned where to find them and how to navigate to various WACs

   – I was surprised by how much staff members need to be aware of licensing reqs; I had assumed that was the responsibility of the Directors
   – There are a lot of requirements for staff member trainings!

   – WACs provide the framework for how a program is conducted, and influence what activities are allowed within our day-to-day work

There was so much information. Looking through all the different titles they had alone was overwhelming, let alone reading through some of them. WAC 110-300-335 was particularly surprising. I didn’t realize that restraining a child was allowed when it pertains to safety but it makes sense. The details in the WACs will definitely be in my mind when I’m evaluating how to handle situations.

1. There are very detailed rules for any possible actions we might make. Some requirements look more general and common sense, and some are more detailed. I am just amazed how many rules we need to follow to open and run a child care center. But they seem reasonable and make sense to me, to create a safe and responsible environment for children.

2. Program and Daily schedule: I was aware that there were certain criteria for developing the daily schedule for each child care facility, but I still thought there is some liberty in creating their own schedules depending on their school philosophies.. I was surprised that those requirements are much more specific and strict. For example, they must meet the daily morning or afternoon active outdoor play time requirements: (i) Twenty minutes for each three hours of programming for infants (as tolerated) and toddlers; (ii) Thirty minutes for each three hours of programming for children preschool age and older; (iii) Programs that operate more than six hours a day must provide: (A) Ninety minutes of active play for preschool age and older; and (B) Sixty minutes of active play for infants and toddlers; and (iv) Thirty minutes of the active play required by (c)(iii) of this subsection may be moderate to vigorous indoor activities;

3. WACs will definitely influence my professionalism. It will keep reminding me to think and behave in a professional manner and prevent me from causing some troubles. Although I might accidentally make some mistakes, ( because there are overwhelming number of rules and requirements) I know where I can find answers when I come up with a question.

The WAC’s are extremely detailed yet fairly easy to understand. The WAC’s are basically the laws that we abide by while performing our job.
