Going on a WAC Hunt
-
- I discovered that the WACs are very in-depth and cover basically everything I could think of when considering what may occur in a child care facility.
- One WAC that surprised me was WAC 110-300-0175, which covers water hazards and swimming pools. Specifically the section that states that 5 gallon buckets cannot be used for infant/toddler water play. This makes sense but it would not be something I ever thought of.
- WACs will definitely influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children because the guidelines are set in order to minimize the number of risks that the children may face in a child care setting

MemberSeptember 7, 2024 at 7:16 pm- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? I discovered that I need to use other resources to ensure that we have the correct postings. For example WAC 110-300-0505, I needed to go into the DCYF website/forms, WA department of Health, and King County for templates and examples needed.
- <b style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>Were you surprised by any of the WACs? WAC 110-300-0340 Expulsion. It is important to establish preventative strategies before expulsion and resources for children that are being expelled. Since I have heard from other providers that they expel children because of their behavior. (b) Provide a record to the parent or guardian about the expulsion and the steps that were taken to avoid expulsion. The record must include the date, time, early learning program staff involved, and details of each incident that led to expulsion; and
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? To ensure that we are establishing a safe and learning environment for children in my care. It is important to follow and refer to our WACS as well as become aware of WACS updates.

2. I wasn’t necessarily surprised by them, but I was finding difficulty navigating the site
3. Yes, because there’s a lot of record keeping that has to be done and usually documents are being made every day.

MemberSeptember 9, 2024 at 4:48 pm- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? Very in-depth descriptions, expectations and scenarios that can occur or recur regularly that I never considered about. But I appreciated the thoroughness and a clear expectation so that we all do and strive for a healthy, thriving environment for the children!
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? WAC 110-300-0335 (1)
Physical restraint must only be used if a child’s
safety or the safety of others is threatened … I was surprised about this one, only that I would have never consider having physical restraints as a way to protect them. But I appreciate how required documentation from the parents are there so that both parties (parents & provider) are on the same page about how to handle such a sensitive, tough situation. - Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? Yes, I do see how it influences my practice of caring as it puts everyone on the same page about how children should be treated in specific scenarios so that they are care for properly and encourage healthy growth. I discovered there is a lot of WACs and am not surprised as it continues to update and be revised as the years go on so that we are meeting the needs of every generation.

MemberSeptember 9, 2024 at 9:52 pm- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? I learned that there are WACS for far more then I ever really thought about. There are WACS for how big a space needs to be per child in a room and this changes by age. This answered a lot of questions I had about why certain rooms in my center could hold more or less children. I previously thought this was my Directors choice.
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? [110-300-0155] I was surprised to learn how open the WACS are to screen time in the classroom. There are details about how much and what is acceptable. Screen time is generally looked down on in my center so I did not know there were ways the state finds O.K.
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? The WACS seem to cover a lot of what should be done and how when it comes to a child’s whole day. They review what teachers should and should not do as well, including what the classroom should look like. So many of the rules seem to concern safety and best practices to help young kids learn and feel safe. So much of my day is ruled by the WACS, even if I did not know it before reading them.

1. The WAC is extremely thorough and has things listed that you would never think would occur during childcare.
2. I did not have have any surprise. However, I appreciated the fact the WAC thought of EVERY scenario that could possibly happen during childcare and provided us guidelines and professional ways to handle each situation.
3. I absolutely see how the WAC can and will influence me daily while working in childcare.
-

- I learned that the WAC is based on current research and how it affects the outcomes for the children. There are 18 sections that all employees must recognize.
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs?
- I wasn’t only because when you’re working with children, every detail matters. This is a critical age where everything needs to be done correctly and up to code. The WACs is what keep our children safe and cared for.
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?
- Yes I can, it reminds us adults of the important specific things children need to succeed. Making sure a child washes their hands after using the bathroom, making sure they’re getting enough sleep, enough to eat, etc.
