Going on a WAC Hunt

MemberAugust 30, 2024 at 6:04 amI discovered that WACs cover all the individual rules that go into licensing, all to ensure the child and staff’s safety. I wasn’t surprised by any of the WACs, but it made me feel more at ease to see so many security checks in place. This will certainly influence my day to day actions in making sure that I’m following the rules and not going against the licensing rules that I learned about.

First thing I discovered was about the form we were to fill out and that there are no questions in any of the documents given like it suggested. That was frustrating, but then I just assumed that we were to form our own questions based on the information given, so that’s what I did. I wish I would have thought to visit this forum first and see that the resources have been updated, but the form we were to fill out haven’t been and that’s where the confusion comes in. Anyway, back to the question at hand:
I discovered that Washington is VERY serious about childcare and who gets to administer it, what their qualifications are and how best to train them and monitor them. I discovered that they are very determined to make the rules and regulations universal within the state and I find that very comforting as I’ve worked in other states where it seemed every facility had their own guidelines.
I wasn’t really surprised about any of the rules, just about how very thorough they were. There really is no way to be confused about what exactly is required of you as a owner, parent or staff.
I can see using these WACs everyday, but it taking decades to memorize. Thankfully, that isn’t required as we have these handy resources to refer to as needed.

MemberAugust 31, 2024 at 6:07 pm- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? I discovered that there is a WAC for everything. They are very specific and detailed when discussing regulations so there’s no room for different interpretations
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? I was not necessarily surprised by any. While reading through them they all seem very resasonable and were easy to comprehend the significance.,
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? Yes, since these are licensing rules I think it will be easy to keep them in mind while there are children in my care. These rules were set up for the safety and well being of every child which is important as an educator.

MemberSeptember 2, 2024 at 8:08 pm- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? I learned how in detailed each requirement is; each section is incredibly thorough, which leaves little up to interpretation. There are also a lot of requirements for early learning centers and professionals! I’m glad that Washington state has these requirements that protect children and ensure they thrive in school.
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? I was pleasantly surprised that each WAC was easy to understand and interpret. Usually I find information like this to use jargon I don’t understand, which makes understanding the whole purpose of the document difficult. I did not find that in this activity, which was nice.
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? I can definitely see how the WACs will influence my day to day practice because they often outline regulations surrounding activities that will happen on a daily or weekly basis. I also appreciated how clearly the training requirements and timelines are outlined for each role in a child care center.

2. I can’t say that I was necessarily surprised by any of the WACs but I was impressed by how thorough they were in covering such a vast range of specific topics.
3. These absolutely will influence my day-to-day, following the guidelines removes guessing from the job which allows me as a caregiver to focus on the proper practices.

I discovered there’s an immense amount of regulations set in place for the school system that really cover most/if not all the bases, and It makes me really confident that there are people out there that truly care for the wellbeing of our children.
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? Like most people are replying I was also shocked by the child restraint, however, It brings me comfort that the state takes a lot of precautions and coverage for the children’s safety.
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? The WAC’s creates a foundation I can follow or look to if I need guidance. It’s really informative and not only helps me as an employee but can also help parents understand the system.

1. I learned that there are a lot more WACS than I originally anticipated there being, and also that the WACS is fundamental for decision-making and conducting yourself ethically in an early developmental setting
2. I do not think I was surprised by any of the WACs since each one that I read made sense when dealing with violent children, unthought-of situations, and regulations were fairly standard.
3. I can definitely see how the WACS will form my day-to-day process at work because the WACS acts as a foundation for proper childcare and orderly conduct.

1. I discovered that there are a lot of requirements for a lot of things. For example, the training requirements needed from all the employees and also all the requirements for a safe environment. I understand better why these requirements are so important when working with children, each requirement and detail are important for the safety of children and their family.
2. I was surprised (but also makes sense) by the amount of details that these WACs have to provide. Each section talked about something specific and it would link back to another WACs. It I pretty helpful to have so much detail into these documents, it can help everyone who wants to work with children about the importance of their safety.
3. I can see WACs influencing my day-to-day practice in caring for children, especially the license requirements. These are a great opportunity to learn multiple ways to help children so that they can be safe. How to do first aid and CPR, how to prevent various forms of harm, and to help them improve are very helpful for these kind of jobs. It will influence me even outside my working space, when I have my own family or even friends visiting. These skills are necessary, and it is good that the WACs have this important information and requirements for us.

- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity?
I discovered how deeply regulated is to run an Early Learning center. There is WAC for everything. However many of their WACs look similar to running a doctor’s office. - Were you surprised by any of the WACs? Not really, they were pretty reasonable.
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? Yes, these rules will set a minimum standard so the parents can feel more confident knowing that the ELC complies

- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? I learned that there are many rules and regulations that I as a professional childcare giver must maintain and be aware of to ensure a child’s safety.
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? I was surprised by the in depth detail the WACs go into and expected some to be more of general statements not laid out in such scrupulous detail.
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? Its important that I make sure my classroom meets these expectations and that I am always aware of any where I lack and educate myself as to then be able to provide the service.

MemberSeptember 5, 2024 at 9:04 pm1. What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity?
There is a lot of information. I won’t be able to remember all of them accurately but I know where to find the relevant information.
2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs?
I haven’t been able to go through all of the WACS in the but I was slightly surprised by one that was listed on the worksheet which is in-service traning. I thought the trainings seem intense but the time given to complete it is reasonable.
3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?
Definitely. It is nice to know there is some sort of consistency in place across all childcare providers.

Washington State has a lot of standards that you must follow when it comes to teaching
2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs?
WAC 110-300-0465 surprised me with how much records actually need to be saved and kept track of.
3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?
As I go through the WACs a little more i think they play a part in my day to day practice because of just how much information is there, there has to be something that will make its way into my daily routine

MemberSeptember 6, 2024 at 6:30 pm-There are many rules in place to keep children safe. including those that are common sense and those that are not.
Were you surprised by any of the WACs?
-I was surprised by the ratios. As a parent its hard enough to manage 2 kids sometimes , so 7 or more is wild. I was also surprised about the one regarding physical restraints.
Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?
-Yes because they are designed to not only hold everyone accountable for what’s going but also to keep everyone safe and comfortable within the facility from the staff to the children and parents.

1. I discovered that the WACs lay out some really detailed and specific rules for early learning programs. They cover everything from the initial intentions and authority behind the regulations to training requirements, record-keeping, and licensing procedures. What stood out to me is how each WAC has its own role in making sure early learning programs are well-regulated and focused on keeping children safe and promoting high-quality care. For example, I learned that anyone providing child care for groups of children needs to be officially licensed by the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), which underscores just how important formal oversight is.
2. Yes, I was a bit surprised by how thorough some of the requirements are. For instance, the training requirements and record-keeping rules are more detailed than I expected. It’s impressive how much detail goes into ensuring providers are well-prepared and that all aspects of care are properly documented. The fact that there’s a specific licensing requirement for anyone providing child care also highlights the level of seriousness and structure involved in maintaining high standards.
3. Definitely. The WACs will have a big impact on my daily routine. Knowing that I need to comply with these regulations makes it clear that I have to stay up-to-date with training, keep records, and make sure everything is in line with licensing requirements. This structured approach helps ensure that I provide a safe, effective, and high-quality environment for the children. It’s not just about following rules—it’s about creating a space where kids can thrive, knowing that all the behind-the-scenes work is being done right.
