1. What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity?

While completing this activity, I found several different WACs that outline the regulations required for implementing licensing. While following the handout, I found the guidebook to be easy to follow and it outlines the different WAC numbers and how they align with DCYF requirements.

2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs?

I was not necessarily surprised, but instead I was relieved at how accessible these policies and procedures are and it made me more confident in my ability to support my center.

3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?

The WACs will continue to influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children as it will ensure children are safe, standards are set for early learning and development, the health and nutrition standards are being met and followed, and staff are continuously being trained and held to professional standards.

1. I discovered that there are a lot of WACs, but I see how they are all necessary to ensure safety and well-being
2. I was not surprised as I can see they are necessary. I was a little surprised that certain things that seemed obvious to me needed to be stated officially.
3. Yes I can see how they influence day to day. They provide a base to ensure safety and well being, and that each child care center is at least providing basic care.

Learning about restraint rules also learning about waivers surprised me and I’ll definitely be learning more of restraint tools to use instead of the old fashion grabbing a child

   I learned that there are different requirements needed for childcare facilities and early learning professionals to make them compliant with WA state’s requirements for licensure. I learned that there are meticulous requirements needed to have a safe and approved licensed childcare facility, things that you wouldn’t even think of as a parent trying to make your home safe for your child.
2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs? WAC 110-300-0225 states that pets and animals are allowed on the premises following certain guidelines which was interesting to me. I’d think that pets were not allowed.
3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity?
   Yes, I can see that the WACs will have me be more thorough and consider all safety hazards when working at a childcare facility.

1. I discovered the Guidelines related to fostering developmentally appropriate practices for children of different ages.

2. The rules around screen time for children were surprising to me, they can vary significantly depending on the age group and are pretty strict.

3. The WACs will influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children since they ensure safe and responsible care for the children, and should be followed consistently.

I discovered that the WACs are very detailed and cover every single thing possible, even stuff I didnt think had to be said. I was not really surprised by any of them, they all made sense. There is a lot to keep track of and it is important to be detail-oriented.

1. While reading, I learned that there are a lot of different requirements that need to be followed in order to be accommodating with the standards for Washington state.
2. WAC 110-300-0335 (1)- This requirement surprised me because I did not know that this was allowed. But I am glad that physically restraining a child is an okay thing to do if the safety of others is at stake and the policy procedures for this are taken.
3. I can see how these WACs influence the day-to-day structure of your day depending on what is going on, there are steps in place for you to follow and stay in in agreement with to keep everyone safe, healthy, and learning in a positive environment.

1. What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? While completing the activity, I discovered that all of the WACs are not only to protect the children but also to protect the care giver and the parent. I appreciate how the WACs were considering all the parties, not just one.
2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs? I wasn’t necessarily surprised by any of the WACs specifically, but I thought it was interesting how much effort between care giver to parent is necessary. For example, WAC 110-300-0055(1) says, “An Early Learning Center must inform parents or guardians about the importance of developmental screenings for each child from birth through age five.” I would just assume that kind of thing is just the parent’s responsibility.
3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? I can see how the WACs will influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children because everything that I do in my program should be based off of these rules and regulations, and if I have a question or concern I should go to the WACs for answers.

While going through the WACs, I discovered how detailed and specific they are in guiding everything from staff qualifications to health and safety standards. It’s clear that the regulations are designed to ensure a safe, nurturing environment for children, covering things like child-to-staff ratios, emergency protocols, and requirements for ongoing training.

Some of the WACs surprised me, especially how strict the guidelines are for things like background checks and staff-to-child ratios. I didn’t realize how detailed those requirements would be, and it shows how much focus there is on maintaining a safe environment.

I can definitely see how the WACs will impact my day-to-day work. For example, knowing the exact staff-to-child ratios ensures that we’re providing enough attention and care to each child. The health and safety guidelines will influence how I organize daily activities and ensure everything is in compliance. Overall, the WACs will be a guide for structuring the environment, planning activities, and ensuring we’re always meeting the best practices for child care.
