When points of view differ, there is either disagreement, reflection/acceptance, or mutual acceptance of differences. In preschool, at the appropriate time, we talk it out for each child gets a turn to share their point of view through words, demonstration or pictures to build empathy for one another.
I do think views can change through discussion, more information, and reflection.

Heather, your approach to discussing differing points of view in preschool is thoughtful and effective. Encouraging empathy and open communication fosters understanding and potential for perspective change.

Welcoming Materials:
- Create welcome materials in multiple languages to ensure the family feels included and informed.
- Develop a brochure or handbook that highlights key information about the school, community, and resources available.
-
Cultural Exchange Events:
- Organize cultural exchange events where families can share aspects of their heritage, such as food, music, or traditional clothing.
- Encourage the newly arrived family to showcase elements of their culture during these events.
-
Buddy System:
- Implement a buddy system where an established student or family can help the newcomer navigate the school and community.
- This promotes a sense of belonging and helps the family integrate more smoothly.
-
Inclusive Curriculum:
- Incorporate diverse perspectives into the curriculum to reflect the cultural backgrounds of all students.
- Choose literature, history, and arts materials that include stories and contributions from various cultures.
-
Community Outreach:
- Establish connections with local cultural organizations or community groups to provide additional support and resources for the family.
- Collaborate with these organizations to host events that celebrate diversity within the community.
-
Flexible Scheduling and Communication:
- Be flexible with scheduling to accommodate family needs, especially during the initial adjustment period.
- Use various communication methods, including translation services if necessary, to ensure effective and clear communication between school and family.
-
Diana’s suggestions for the Four Corners Activity are comprehensive and inclusive, promoting a welcoming and supportive environment for families from diverse cultural backgrounds. Great ideas!

I think that how people respond to diversity comes from how they were raised and how the world around them has influenced themas well.
-
JODI, your insights on how people respond to diversity are thought-provoking. It’s true that upbringing and external influences play a significant role. Great contribution!

MemberFebruary 6, 2024 at 7:35 pmIf a child recently immigrated and joined my class I would give the child the opportunity to tell the class their favorite things about the country and culture they are coming from. This would allow the other students time to learn about their new classmate and understand where they are coming from.
-
Great suggestion, Jennifer! Encouraging a new student to share about their culture fosters inclusivity and empathy among classmates. Well done!
