Screen time in childcare

Screen time for young children is not necessary. I think the environment around them has plenty of stimulation that is better for the child’s development. When my children were in childcare after school, they were given a short period of screen time during the young toddler’s nap time. That made the screen time special because it was something to look forward to as “a big kid”. But the young toddlers didn’t get any screen time.

I never gave it a lot of thought before. I grew up on computers and television, but after taking this course I can see the danger on not limiting screen time

I think parents probably expect their child in childcare to be doing active things, learning, and making friends rather than having screen time. Maybe the occasional screen could be used for some activities and for older kids but I don’t think it’s necessary or beneficial to rely on screens.

I do not like having screens in classrooms and would rather have children play with hands-on toys or books. Screen time is becoming more prominent in schools and children are using screens way too early. I did not have screen time in my classrooms when I was younger and I am extremely glad that I didn’t because I think that it can cause many issues for children. Children should learn how to read using a physical book and should also learn how to play with toys and other objects while they are bored rather than relying on screens.

I don’t think screen time can be terrible but it’s definitely not good at the same time, when I think it’s good would be music or stimulating videos, but nothing else. I think too much screen time for younger audiences is unhealthy and is not the best route for certain growth developments.

MemberDecember 23, 2022 at 5:54 pmI feel with my 13 years as a provider the children have to much time at home with screen time. Puzzles, legos, books, drawing have always been the best quiet relaxing activities that works for all ages in my care. Screen time has never shown a positive result.

I think a lot of screentime for little kids is bad and should be very limited. In my center we do have iPads for the teachers to use but we mainly put on music with them which engages the children. As seen from the research screentime puts kids at a, “higher risk of being overweight, prejudiced, sedentary, fearful, aggressive, and/or unable to distinguish between fantasy and reality” (Safe guard).

At a childcare there should be very little to no screen time as there is no need for it, the children should interact with each other which helps them develop. At home under supervision the screen time can vary but should not be extensive periods of time.

MemberDecember 28, 2022 at 10:35 pmWhen I think of allowing children to have screen time, I believe that it should be limited in a childcare facility. Although there are many educational videos and programs out there, I don’t want it to become the new “normal” for the way we teach. I am all for fun, but I believe we can have this in moderation!

While I, a 22 year old, manage my own screen time, I can imagine just how vital it is to manage it for younger, developing minds.

I don’t think screen time is appropriate at all for children under 5, and after 5 i believe it should be very limited.
