Screen time in childcare

<div>
</div>In today’s life, we can see kids always have tablets/mobile everywhere while they are with their families, so I prefer not to give screen time in early learning centers because in this age group kids really need to have physical activities to help them develop their brain.

I believe screens can play a role in early childhood settings, but it’s crucial to use them thoughtfully. I think we should prioritize quality content, limit screen time, and encourage interactive engagement to really support children’s overall development.

-
Nam, it’s important to balance screen time with other activities for holistic development.

Screen time for children in childcare should be limited and used carefully! If screens are used, pick educational programs that get kids thinking or singing along, instead of shows where they just sit and watch.

MemberSeptember 26, 2024 at 9:09 pmExcessive screen time can hinder children’s development by limiting opportunities for critical activities like physical play, social interaction, and hands-on learning, all of which are essential for developing motor skills, communication, and problem-solving abilities. It may also reduce face-to-face interactions that help children build emotional bonds and regulate their emotions. Additionally, too much screen exposure can disrupt sleep patterns, lead to attention issues, and impact a child’s ability to focus and engage with their surroundings, ultimately affecting their overall cognitive and social development.

While some screentime alone isn’t necessary bad or negative, prolonged periods of time in front of a screen can unfortunately lead to negative side affects.

MemberOctober 1, 2024 at 4:20 pmScreen time is a subject that is up for interpretation. Screens have made a huge impact on our lives and can be seen everywhere we go. There’s screens in the grocery stores, doctors office, and even when you’re dropping mail off at the post office. Screens in childcare should be used for education purposes only and should be monitored if children are using a device. I feel that screentime can be good for children in the classroom when it come to education content or if you needed some type of music but the bulk of the screen time should be left up to the parents at home.
-
Screen time in childcare should be limited and focused on educational, interactive content that complements hands-on activities. Excessive use can hinder important social, physical, and imaginative development. Providers should supervise screen time to turn passive watching into active learning, ensuring that it doesn’t replace real-world play and exploration, especially for younger children. Balancing technology with physical and social experiences is key to supporting healthy growth.

It’s hard to see children being affected by screen time, especially when it’s becoming so prevalent in our society, often finding it hard to stay away from. Even myself I see the changes in my own behavior or of people my same age when it comes to screens. It’s hard to remove technology from the classroom especially when it is required to carry out the job though. And I see children responding to it, knowing what a camera is or how a touchscreen works. I can’t say technology should never be used in the classroom (as it is a part of the job to keep parents updates) but keeping children away from it within our control is necessary.

“Great point, Christena. Screen time can have benefits if used in moderation for young children.”

I feel there should not be any kind of screen time for children of age 2 and less in childcare. for toddlers and preschoolers age appropriate and educative 5-10 min videos can be shown if necessary.
