I would let them tour the classroom and the playground so that they can see that we meet each of the WAC requirements and that we take their child’s safety very seriously. For example, the water temperature does not exceed 120 degrees Fahrenheit, there are non-slip rugs, the playground has the appropriate shock-absorbing material, etc.

    1. Supervision: Emphasize the presence of attentive and qualified staff members who provide constant supervision to ensure the safety of the children. Highlight the low child-to-staff ratio, indicating that each child receives adequate attention and care.

    2. Secure Entry and Exit: Explain the controlled access points of the facility, including locked doors or a secure entry system. Highlight how these measures prevent unauthorized individuals from entering the premises and ensure that only authorized individuals have access to the children.

    3. Health and Hygiene: Discuss the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy environment. Highlight regular handwashing routines for both staff and children, proper sanitation practices, and cleanliness protocols for toys and equipment.

    4. Emergency Preparedness: Explain the protocols in place to handle emergencies such as fires, natural disasters, or medical incidents. Highlight the presence of well-defined emergency evacuation plans, regular drills, and trained staff members who know how to respond effectively in emergency situations.

    5. Safety Equipment: Point out the availability and proper use of safety equipment, including first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and childproofing measures such as outlet covers, cabinet locks, and safety gates.

    6. Staff Training: Highlight that all staff members are trained in CPR, first aid, and other relevant safety procedures. Discuss ongoing professional development and training programs that ensure staff members stay up-to-date on best practices for child safety.

    7. Background Checks: Assure the prospective parent that all staff members undergo thorough background checks, including criminal history and reference checks, to ensure the safety and well-being of the children.

    8. Reporting and Communication: Discuss the open and transparent communication channels between parents and staff. Highlight that any concerns, incidents, or suspected cases of abuse or neglect are reported promptly to the appropriate authorities, as mandated by law.

If I were giving a prospective parent a tour through my program, the safety procedues I would highlight are the baby gates at the top and bottom of the staircase and the babygate allowing access to the kitchen/laundry room which they would see as soon as they came in. I would then point out the curtains and explain how we have removed window blinds with cords and replaced them with curtains to prevent strangulation hazards. I would then point out how we have put plug covers in the electrical outlets around the home to prevent children from electrocution. I would also show them the cabinets and how we have locks on all cabinets. While passing furniture in the upstairs bedrooms, I would show them how all furniture is secured to the wall to prevent children from being crushed. I would show then the locations of our grab and go bag and any first aid/emergency kits along with the emergency plans.

If you were giving a prospective parent a tour through your program, what safety procedures would you highlight?

I would greet them at the entrance area and ask them to sign in to the school. Emphasizing that outsiders can only be buzzed in my the front office and anyone who comes in, a record is kept. From there I would take them to the classroom. I would show them all the fun activities we have in the classroom and all the resources we have for child exploration. Afterwards I would also emphasize the room’s safety precautions. For example locked doors, entrance/exit in case of fire drill, cleanliness of our food and bathroom area, everything that should be accessible to children is their height, everything that shouldn’t be accessible to children kept either high up or behind a locked door. Afterwards I would take them to the outside area and do the same style. Afterwards, if their questions have been answered, take them back to the front, thank them, and have them sign out.

First of all I’ll welcome them into a classroom and give them a classroom tour. I’ll show where the exits/bathrooms are and the fire exit route. After that I’ll show what procedure we do to ensure the children’s safety such as labeling material, keeping safety hazards either out of the classroom or out of children’s reach as well as sanitary procedures such as putting on gloves when serving food or applying medication and bleaching the work and keeping it out of children’s reach until bleach is dry.

If giving a prospective parent a tour, I would highlight the safety procedures that directly impact their child. I would also be prepared to explain other procedures if the parent asks about them or if I learn of special needs for the child.

First of all, I would give you a warm welcome with a greeting and a smile and I would introduce myself, explaining that I will give you a tour of the school showing you the classes, the learning and interaction areas, the bathrooms, the food area, the areas in where they take a nap, the outdoor play area, the curriculum and the rules of the center, but above all I would focus more on the class according to the age of your child. To make him feel more trustworthy and explain that all families are welcome.

Be welcoming foremost, show the entry ways; gates, doors having code locks, how children cannot easily “escape” the center, fences, playground equipment. Once inside, all the fire exits, bathroom, changing table, the safety of the kitchen, electrical outlets, locks, working telephone.
