I would introduce them to the classroom, show all the neat toys. Then show exits and entrances, including the security. Then show them first aid, and eating stations.

As a teacher or provider, I will ensure the safety of the children by showing the parents the safety manual of the school, first aid, fire drill exit, shutdowns for guns or intruders. As a teacher, I’d highlight that safety is a top priority in our program. I’d show how we secure all doors, check IDs at pick-up, keep daily headcounts, and follow strict cleaning and handwashing routines. I’d also explain our emergency drills and how we supervise kids closely both indoors and outdoors. Parents deserve to feel confident that their child is safe with us.

If I were giving a prospective parent a tour through my program, I would show and tell about the access and security of the building, the layout of the classrooms, first aid and emergency pack in each room, and gated areas around the perimeters of the building as some of the safety procedures I would highlight. I would also discuss the procedures for fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills as well as cleaning and sanitation procedures along showing the amenities of the childcare program.

I would highlight out ratio of caregiver to child, which, in my current placement, is around 7:1. I would highlight our cleaning procedures, our organized classrooms, the amount of supervision we provide, the warm coworking environment, and the selection of toys that we have. Everything in the center is carefully selected with the child’s learning and safety in mind.
