I would highlight all policies and procedures pertaining to classroom and playground safety, food and fire safety, sanitation, equipment safety, any pamphlets I can supply to them about our facility, and in case of emergency contacts list on file are just a few things I would highlight.

I would invite the parents to tour the facility and show them things like, sanitation stations, restrooms, kitchen, classrooms, changing stations, and emergency stations.

I would highlight our 8 to 1 ratio. How we secure all heavy items to the wall, ie: shelves and cubbies. All chemicals and hazardous materials are out of reach and locked behind a door. As well as the doors are always locked from the outside and we have an alarm to alert if the door has been opened.

I would highlight that our doors to the school are always locked and that there is always a locked gate before the doors that is always shut. I would highlight that outlets are covered; all cleaning supplies are locked away or out of reach to children. I would talk about our outside playground and how there is a fence surrounding it with a locked gate where children cannot access the lock. I would highlight that all care providers are required to know CPR and first aid as well as a food handlers permit.

On a tour, I would highlight the fire escape plans, shelter-in-place plans, first-aid resources, inaccessibility of cleaning chemicals to children, soft-edge protectors, child-proof outlets and infant cribs equipped with wheels made for rolling outside for building evacuations.

I would highlight our emergency plan which is outside each classroom door. I would also point out the first aid kits and emergency exits in each room.

I would highlight all of the safety equipment and their locations, i.e the fire extinguishers, first aid kids, and any signage for emergency plans. I would also go through the emergency preparedness plan with them 1:1

I would welcome the parents and show how well we keep children safe, keeping the environment clean and free of hazards and how actively we are supervising and nurturing the children.

I would show the parents how secure our building is, exits, safety procedures, bathrooms, handwashing stations, how we sanitize, how we prep out food, where we keep our first aid and how well the room set up is to avoid injuries.

If I were giving a parent a tour of a child care facility I would want to show them fire extinguishers, show them rooms are child safe, ensure that all staff is trained. I’d show them that we make sure that toys we have are safe for all kids etc.

The first thing I would do is be sure to show them a big welcome and explain the safety procedures as we toured the building, pointing them out so the parent feels more at ease and realizes their child would be safe with us in the childcare facility. I would note the monthly fire drills that take place, the lockdown and earthquake drills, the exits, the caution we take when working with children with allergies or special needs and so on. I would make sure to tell them about the earthquake putty we use for things on shelves, the naptime safety we have such as how often we check on the sleeping children during naps, and even the headcount policies to remind the parents how seriously we take our job and the safety of the children in our care.

Procedures I would highlight are the general safe layout of the room and precautions we are using to prevent injury. I would go over our general routine for cleaning toys, tables, chairs, floors and other things that should be shiny clean! I would also show our access to first aid and other emergency and health related necessities

I would welcome then and be open and inviting, I would then give them a tour of the room and a run down of everyhting that we do and the dofferent play areas we have. Show them the exits all the paperwork we have posted on our wall as well as the fire escape. Then send them home with a packet of all the daycare information that goes out to every parent when inquiring the daycare.

I think I would start with all our emergency and health procedures. I would show them all emergency exits and routes for the rooms, and how often we practice these skills. I would then show them things such as our masking policy and hand washing, to provide to comfortability.
