If I were giving a prospective parent a tour I would show them around the place and what activities we do. Then I’d go right into showing or telling them things like all our staff are CPR and First Aid trained, that we maintain low staff-to-child ratios so that there’s more eyes on the children without having too many to watch, also that all the staff have background checks before we hire them to work for us. We also make sure we have a hazard-free environment so we make sure its both clean and free of hazards. We have emergency preparedness so fire and lockdown drills to prepare the kids for things that might happen.

while touring I might point out safe spaces that have safety procedure posted, examples would be fire emergency action plans( assembly points), where safety kits are kept and depending on the child age range I may point out more specific needs. for toddler care, that may be corner protectors on the walls or safe play equipment.

I would highlight that everything in our center is on a buzz in or code/fob key entry (for staff). I would highlight how everything is safely stored and clearly labeled in case of emergency. I would point out areas outside of class are safe and fenced in.

I would personally show them the different range of toys and activities we have , and tell them that everything is safe and at the child’s height so they can reach without possibly falling or getting hurt, the bathrooms , where the fire extinguisher is, the exit routes in case of an emergency , outside and anywhere else that is necessary.

I would highlight how often we wash our hands (providers and children). Then show them the bathroom and play space, where the first aid is– and that all providers are CPR trained. Talk briefly about drills and how we conduct them and how often.

If I were walking a parent through the childcare center I work at, I would highlight how the children wash their hands before and after every activity to prevent spreading harmful germs to others, how the baskets of activities are at child height and they are light so the children won’t injure themselves, how the outdoor area is landscaped for optimal monitoring, how we have several first aid kits around our center, how we have a few fire extinguishers, how we have cushioning on all furniture corners.

If I were giving a prospective parent a tour through my home daycare, I would highlight the safety measures that protect children every day. I’d show them how cleaning supplies and medications are locked away and out of reach, and explain that small items that could be choking hazards are kept away from play areas. I’d point out the childproofing features like outlet covers, safety gates, and secure latches on cabinets. I would also share our emergency procedures, such as having smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and a posted emergency plan with contacts (including CPS). Parents would see that outdoor play areas are fenced and supervised at all times. Finally, I’d explain our health and illness policies, safe food handling, and how we practice regular handwashing to prevent the spread of germs.
