If I were giving a prospective parent a tour through our program, I would highlight the safety procedures we follow every day. I would show them the emergency exits, fire extinguishers and first aid kits. I would explain our handwashing routines, how we sanitize toys and surfaces and how we keep medications locked away and out of children’s reach. I would also mention our sign-in and sign-out policy and how only authorized adults can pick up the children.

CPR and 1st Aid Training, security system (door codes), and fenced playground areas would probably be the only ones that I would bring up during. I would ask for any questions and concerns at the end of the tour or if they asked along the tour. I would also give them the parent handbook and let them know I was available for future questions or concerns.

I would show them the classroom: how everything is labeled and an appropriate height for the children. Any of the more messy or dangerous crafting supplies are kept up higher for teacher use only. I would show them our grab and go back, emergency flashlight, and the monthly fire drill log. I would should them the kitchen and our food handlers’ cards, explaining how we always wash our hands and wear gloves. I would show them the bathroom and explain the nightly cleaning procedures for the whole facility. I would show them the diapering chart, explaining that we document everything for each child. Lastly, I would show them the outdoor area where we have a safe place to dig (sand box), a safe place to climb (little wooden boat), and a large fence to enclose the shaded yard.

I would walk prospective families through our safety and sanitary procedures that we abide by during the day, as well as discuss how we plan and practice for emergencies. These procedures would include where our hardwired safety items, such as fire alarms, sprinklers, exit routes, etc, are located throughout the building. I would point out our posted emergency procedures and mitigation plans. I would also walk them through the toys and materials we have in our classroom, as well as our outdoor equipment, to ensure they know their children will be exposed to safe equipment. I would also walk them through the school to point out the nurse’s office, where defibrillators and other emergency medical supplies are located, and each of our exits. In terms of sanitation, I would show them the classroom bathroom and explain all cleaning procedures, such as handwashing requirements and how often children are taken to the bathroom, even if they have not expressed a need to go. I would also walk through handwashing procedures throughout the day- after playtime, before meals, after outside time, after rest time, etc.

I would give them a tour of the facility showing them the cleanliness state we keep it in. I would show then the outside playground and the safety fences we have put in place to ensure their safety. I would also tell them about our cleaning schedule, how everyday staff are required to three step sanitize toys flat surfaces as well as vacuum and mop the classrooms.

If I were giving a tour to a prospective parent, I would highlight how our program makes health and safety a top priority every day. I would explain that all staff are trained in CPR, First Aid, and mandated reporting, and that we follow strict DCYF safety and sanitation guidelines. I’d show how we keep entry doors locked, check ID for every pick-up, and maintain a sign-in/sign-out system for accountability.I would also point out our cleaning and disinfecting routines, safe food-handling practices, and how we ensure supervision at all times—no child is ever left alone. Outdoors, I would show our secure fenced play area, proper fall-zone surfacing, and emergency plans posted near exits. Finally, I’d share how we conduct regular emergency drills, keep first aid kits fully stocked, and communicate quickly with families about any health or safety concerns. My goal would be to help parents feel confident knowing their child is safe, cared for, and protected in every part of the day.

I might highlight the process for washing and sanitizing dishes. In my program, children begin the process of washing their own dishes, but this is finished by staff who clean any remaining food from dishes and then process them in an industrial sanitizer.

If I were giving a prospective parent a tour at my program, I would at first greet them with welcoming arms and letting them feel as comfortable as possible knowing that their child may possibly be enrolling into my program soon. I then would go over safety procautions and safety procedures/highlights to give a sense of security with the parent that is touring. The safety highlights that I would go over are, security measures such as secure entry/exit points, detailed emergency plans for various scenarios just in case of a dangerous situation occurs. Having active supervision with appropriate staff-to-child ratios, and also showcase a clean, age-appropriate, and well-maintained environment. Along with staff requirements such as licensing, training, and CPR and first aid.
