<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>2.An early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. provide opportunities for children to listen to people from a range of backgrounds and their perspectives. respect individual differences and acknowledge that membership of a particular group doesn’t mean everyone from that group has the same values, beliefs, rituals and needs. Books, art and videos in the classroom should feature diverse representations of race, ethnicity, age, gender and physical abilities.

Educators should display students’ artwork, especially that which reflects their own cultural or ethnic background. Collaborative conversations with children enable educators to gain insight into children’s knowledge and interests. These understandings can assist educators in planning experiences and providing materials that expand children’s thinking and interests.

i would spend time learning about the students life and family to get a better understanding of them, and then help them teach the class about themself if comfortable. students who are billengial and more confident in one language often struggle with confidence surrounding with the less strong languaage. i would try to spend more 1 on 1 time to support said child.

The WAC that talk about diversity are 110-300-0160, and to a lesser extent 110-300-0320, 110-300-0325 address diversity and acceptance in the classroom, while 110-300-0085 addresses collaboration and communication with families, including incorporation of diversity. The big messages are that every child needs to feel included in the classroom and activities and that families should feel safe and accepted in the program as well.

Which WAC’s address diversity and collaboration with families?

-WAC 110-300-0160 (Promoting acceptance of diversity), WAC 110-300-0085 (Family partnerships and communication), WAC 110-300-0320 (Facilitating child interests, learning, perspective, and productivity) and WAC 110-300-0325 (Creating a climate for healthy child development).

What big messages do the WAC’s give regarding diversity and collaboration?

-One important message from the WAC’s regarding diversity and collaboration was to familiarize yourself with each family during the enrollment period and communicate with the family on a regular basis once the child is enrolled. As providers/teachers it is our job to ask questions about their interests, background, routines, development, communication styles, schedules and get to know their lifestyle so you can better support the child and family. Another important message is to provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities in our everyday curriculum, activities and materials that represent all children and families with diverse dolls, books, pictures, games, music and materials. The important message is to create a welcoming, happy environment where anyone can feel welcome, comfortable and safe.

These are some of the WACs that cover diversity and inclusion all though most WACs are all inclusive in one form or another.

    WAC 110-300-0300 Individual care plan

WAC 110-300-0305 Curriculum philosophy and planning.

WAC 110-300-0315 Language modeling and reasoning.

The big message that WACs gives is that no matter the code they are all inclusive. Getting to know a child is very important to their particular learning plan. I would have the child do a introduction game with the children and staff or do their own poster titled all about me.These are some of the WACs that cover diversity and inclusion all though most WACs are all inclusive in one form or another.

If I were welcoming a child into the classroom, I would first ask the parents if it were okay to ask about their cultures and identities and if there is anything that is crucial in their culture to continue in the classroom on a day-to-day basis (prayer, meals, etc.) that will help the child feel included and not feel left out. I would also start off the day with circle time counting numbers in the child’s language if they have another primary language and see if there are any holidays or celebrations the parents would like to come in and talk to all the children about.

WAC 110-300-0160 discusses the expectations for promoting acceptance of diversity. All children and families must be represented in curriculum, activities, and materials. This includes toys, learning materials, music, games, etc. There must be a balance of different ethnic and cultural groups. Providers must intervene appropriately to stop biased behavior.
