What messages do the WACs convey regarding diversity and collaboration?

The WACs convey that diversity and collaboration with the community are essential to high-quality care. When there is collaboration with the community and other partnerships, children have the opportunity to experience many different cultures where diversity is celebrated.

If i have a new child coming into my class, I usually ask questions and observe the child. I introduce myself to the child and allow the child to feel comfortable with me first before i proceed further. I ask families to send family photos so I have an ice breaker to get to know the child.

    WAC 110-300-0160

    Promoting acceptance of diversity.

What great messages do WACs deliver regarding diversity and collaboration?

That the practice of diversity is too important, not only in child care but also in daily life, since we all have the same human rights, however our skin color, language, etc. change.

Likewise, respect for each person who has different cultures and physical problems.

WAC 110-300-0160 states that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse
    learning opportunities.

    WAC 110-300-0085 states that an
early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals.

WAC 110-300-0160 states that early childcare providers must provide learning opportunities that are culturally/ racially diverse in their curriculums, activities, and materials. 110-300-0160, 110-300-0320, 110-300-0325 all discuss diversity and talk about welcoming diversity in the classroom. 110-300-0085 discusses the importance of collaboration with the families as well as communication, this WAC also talks about the importance of including diversity in the collaborations and communications with the parents and families.

WAC 110-300-160 Promoting and acceptance of diversity:

WAC 110-300-0085 Family partnerships and communication:

The Big Message here is to allow every child to feel equal and comfortable in their learning environment. That to allow all the children to learn other ethnic groups, and know that each one is unique and wonderful.

I believe that these are things that should be taught whether a child of a different culture is the class room or not. That way a child is already welcomed in without confusion when they walk into the room. If I were to make that culture a center of attention for the day, week, or month, I would discuss it with the Childs parents first and ask if they should have any ideas or would like to participate in any activities.

if i was welcoming children into my classroom i would want them and their parents to always feel welcomed and included. i would want to have a good friendly relationship with the kids and the parents too. find out more about their culture, their life styles, the languages they speak. i would really do my best to make them feel all included and welcomed.

WAC 110-300-0160 states that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. I think that the WACs do a good job at giving insight to the ways that racially/culturally unrepresented or insensitive material may affect children, their families, and staff.

The following WACs address inclusion and equity within childcare: WAC 110-300-0030; WAC 110-300-0160; WAC 110-300-0300.

    2. What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?

A main takeaway includes that childcare centers must not discriminate based on identity, background, and more. Additionally, educators must include diverse and culturally appropriate activities into the curriculum. Finally, an individual care plan must be developed for each child to meet their background and cultural needs.

    1. WACS 110-300-85 & 110-300-160, would probably be pretty helpful to refer to when needing to understand diversity and collaboration within families.

    2. the big messages they give off are you need to make sure the child and their families feel welcomed and understood, that the child feels included and welcomed in the learning center, as it will help further development and relationships they make in the learning center
