    WAC 110-300-0330 and WAC 170-296A-6050

Both convey a strong message about diversity inclusion. Putting aside out specific beliefs and helping another family achieve what they see as best is our job to do.

I would include diversity by doing the activity with children about making a picture of their family and identifying all the differences between their family. This lesson teaches them, that even in their own family everybody is unique in their own ways and have differences.

My favorite is opening a discussion for children to talk about their favorite things. We have a circle in which each kid gets to share their favorite meal, favorite color, favorite kind of music, etc. We incorporate things that are rather common with things that might have substantial cultural differences so that it blends in well together.

WAC 110-300-0160 states that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff.

The big message that the WAC gives is that nothing is bias and all cultures, age groups, diverse dolls, books, pictures, family styles and games should be in classroom so there is no sterotypes.

The WACs biggest message regarding diversity and collaboration is that they are important! We need to be taking these seriously! Understanding, accommodating, and encouraging the individuality of students helps us achieve better outcomes and creates a more enriching environment for all. The best way to celebrate the uniqueness of all of our students is to collaborate with their families and communities.

How would I welcome a child into class, help to celebrate their unique differences and help other children welcome and get to know this child?

I would have the child share about the their language, culture, what kind of traditions they have and I would try to be inclusive when doing cultural activities. I would try my best to make sure the kids around them are being respectful of their traditions and I will make sure my curriculum is inclusive of the child. I will also not hang up stereotypical pictures and posters regarding the child’s religion or nationality. I will not display any action conveying the message that I am “biased” toward a another child.

    2. That child care providers need to respect the diverse backgrounds of each child and work with the families that they are providing care for to learn and understand each family’s culture.

WAC 110-300-0160 addresses that early learning programs should have diverse learning materials, music, toys, etc. that represent various cultures, genders, ages, etc. It also states that it is the providers’ job to redirect inappropriate conversations when they hear conversations and/or remarks that are discriminatory or ignorant especially in the subjects of diversity. WAC 110-300-0325 states,

” Representing the diversity found in the early learning program and society, including gender, age, language, and abilities, while being respectful of cultural traditions, values, religion and beliefs of enrolled families” helps create a climate for healthy development in children.

The main WAC guideline that I found relevant to diversity and culture was WAC 110-300-0330, and it was encouraging building a positive relationship with children through specially formulated guidance techniques. My interpretation of this was that in order to understand how to best guide children through the day, some adaptations could be made to the early learning programs, environment, activities and routines to best serve the needs of the children in our care. These adaptations can be made to better suit a child’s strengths, learning ability and culture and community.

    1. Which WACs address diversity and collaboration with families? WAC 110-300-0320 addresses developing activities that are culturally responsive and WAC 110-300-0160 states that an early learner provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities and give examples of what that looks like.
    2. What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration? The big messages the WAC’s give is that it is imperative that in early childhood learning to have culturally and racially diverse lessons, toys, books, and more. It also states to redirect inappropriate conversations. I think it is obvious that there is importance placed onto acknowledging diversity in the classroom.
