    WAC 110-300-0085

An early learning provider must attempt to obtain information
from each child’s family about that child’s developmental, behavioral,
health, linguistic, cultural, social, and other relevant information.
The provider must make this attempt upon that child’s enrollment and
    annually thereafter.

    1. WAC 100-300-0160 states that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. This includes things such as opportunities instructed by the instructor in the curriculum presented to children. this can include things such as books, curriculum, and group discussions. games, and or music.

    2. Allowing room and opportunity for those in class to learn about other cultures is the big message that WACs is stating. it will show and represent the diversity of others in the classroom and allow there to be conclusive education on how to interact with such diverse cultures.

For the questions on the WAC and diversity: 110-300-0160, and to a lesser extent 110-300-0320, 110-300-0325 address diversity and acceptance in the classroom, while 110-300-0085 addresses collaboration and communication with families, including incorporation of diversity.<div>
</div><div>The big picture is that kids need to feel respected and valued and included this is critical to a child developing and thriving.</div>

What messages do the WACs convey regarding diversity and collaboration?

Regarding diversity and collaboration, the WACs are making a point that in order for a child and family of a diverse background to feel welcome and included, teachers and centers must take action to make an effort to include diverse toys, activities, art, posters, games, music etc. We need to create a healthy and safe environment for all children, and to do that we must make an effort to include what that diverse child sees at home. Especially if they have never been in a center before.

When welcoming in a new child i would ask the child to introduce themselves and tell us the name they prefer. Also ask them about their background and things they enjoy doing with their families. Favorite food and other things similar to that.

    1) WAC’s 0030,0055,0085,0160

    2) Diverse Culture it is way more than clothes, holidays, food. There is much more like religion, temperament, age, family background, languages, traditions… So, the most important things it is to be inclusive, respectful, learn about the culture, bring items that represent that culture to the classroom, try to engage parents on school activities, ask more information to them and talk about the importance of diverse society using, games, music, books etc…

WAC coney the message of inclusion of children & families of all cultures, abilities, backgrounds, economic status, etc. They emphasize how the importance of inclusion is in learning, how it helps build character and adapting skills. It also helps in the acceptance of oneself and their own idendity when they feel included in all aspects of their life, not just their home life but school and learning environment as well.

The WACs message regarding diversity and communication with families is that “families are the primary educators of their children”. With this in mind it is important to collaborate with families about expectations and self-assessments towards their children to best support their needs.

    WAC 110-300-0085

The WAC puts emphasis on family partnerships and education. In doing this, it allows for all students and parents to allow their child to have a set goal for them to reach in their development. Allowing diversity and implementation in the classroom is very important and allows for each child to grow and development fluently with fewer distractions or setbacks in the classroom. In turn, this allows the child to feel comfortable and happy in the environment provided where they can remain productive and a contributing student in the classroom.

Having diversity dolls in the classroom… dolls with wheelchairs, crutches, service animals, missing a limb, even in a cast – kids can break bones rather easily on the playground.

Also having diverse books available on the kids’ bookshelves as well as teacher-only books, that are read to the class. Books about family structures, different cultures, bilingual – and not just Spanish/English, but also Korean, Hmong, Chinese, Italian, etc. I had a 4-year-old from Korea that was excited to see an English/Korean book in the classroom.

Asking families to bring in pictures of their everyday life. Pets in the household, siblings and/or friends (with explicit consent from all pictured), celebrations.

In WAC 110-300-0160 it says early learning providers must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities, having diverse books and toys that don’t reinforce stereotypes, and to not ignore bias.

WAC sections 0055-0065, 0080-0085, and 0300-0360 address diversity and collaboration with families. The WACs acknowledge the significance of family and diversity and major factors in a child’s development — that is, they acknowledge that academic spaces are not the only elements that determine a child’s growth and well-being. The rules provide an avenue for early learning providers to partner with families and understand the differences between family home and center early learning requirements, which I believe is really important in embracing a child’s diversity. When I was growing up, I was told by teachers that fostering a “color-blind” classroom was the ultimate solution. This is just another way for people to remain ignorant. The WACs encourage collaboration between family and classroom in order to provide the child with more specific and personal support that can better nurture their unique development.

    1. One of the WACs that addresses diversity and collaborations with families includes WAC 110-300-0160. “An early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff.”

    2. Regarding diversity and collaboration, the WACs encourage celebration of the unique qualities that children, family, and staff can have. It is important to provide opportunities for those in an early learning program to come to a better understanding of one another in regard to differences in culture, backgrounds, etc.
