MemberSeptember 18, 2023 at 4:31 amThe WACs under the heading Emotional Support and Classroom Organization include some bare bones guidelines for inclusion and diversity with a focus on multiculturalism and positive representations. However, these rules really are just the basics for a program, and organizations like the NAEYC have position statements and anti-bias tool kits that give more specific information about how to create diverse and inclusive environments.

MemberSeptember 18, 2023 at 11:58 pmAccording to WAC 110-300-0160 as early learning providers, we must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities for both children and their families to benefit. We don’t want to include stereotypical “diverse” concepts in class, we should include diverse music, toys/dolls, learning about different languages, etc. Also, avoid situations that involve bias and inappropriate conversation or behavior.

MemberSeptember 19, 2023 at 9:25 pm- Which WACs address diversity and collaboration with families? The WACs under Interactions and Curriculum (Learning Supports) include various concepts and rules about being diverse. Such as WAC 110-300-0160 which talks about the acceptance of diversity. And WAC 110-300-0300 talks about individual care plans for being with special needs which is a great way to be collaborative and include diversity.
- What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration? The big message the WACs give is that all children, and their families, must feel included, welcome, and represented in their childcare centers.

MemberSeptember 20, 2023 at 2:44 amAcceptance of diversity… An early learning provider must provide any type of diverse learning opportunity. They must use any type of equipment and or materials that are suitable for the activity. This means that as a learning provider you are able to accept the fact that all children are different, culturally and racially, and by doing so, doing activities with your group will help your children accept that others are different in any kind of way.

MemberSeptember 20, 2023 at 10:28 pmThe WACs make very clear that early learning programs and educators must provide ample opportunity for cultural diverse curriculum in the classroom. This can be through means of art from around the world, cultural days, diverse literature, and much more. One good idea is to create a family forum where you can gather ideas from family members on how to include their culture throughout the classroom in ways that are developmentally appropriate and conducive to learning. Family nights are also a good way to get to know the children and how they interact with other family members, as well as getting to know the family members themselves. We must be diligent as educators in creating a harmonious environment and welcoming all families no matter their background.

WAC 110-300-0085 discusses obtaining information about the children’s cultural background among numerous other things for their developmental goals. WAC 110-300-0160 also discusses the implementation of a diverse curriculum.
The big messages that the WACs give is that diversity is extremely important and not to be neglected in any area of education.

MemberSeptember 24, 2023 at 11:57 pmWhat messages do the WACs convey regarding diversity and collaboration?
To understand and teach diversity appropriately. And collaborating with families to provide consistent communication so the child’s learning ability isn’t affected by the difference of other cultures and languages. And to assure families to continue to raise their child(ren) with their own traditional values, benefits, and languages, as this is crucial to a child’s early learning development.

Promoting acceptance of diversity.
This is the whack I specifically would reference although I know there are more that are also fitting in this category.
I think for older children, having them create an all about me page and being able to have the whole classrooms, personal cultural backgrounds, and stuff like that included is a really fun way to do it for younger children I think even just having them bring in a photo of their family and being able to have like a family wall and recognizing that all families look different and just starting the foundation of cultural acceptance very young is important z

WAC 110-300-0160 is promoting acceptance of diversity. early learning providers must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Emphasizes cultural competence, culturally responsive environments, collaborations with families, inclusivity, individualized planning, equity, respect for differences, involvement of families, supporting children with special needs. All these are used to build an environment that supports growth for kids.

While reviewing the Washington Administrative Codes (WACs), I found that several WACs address diversity and collaboration with families, such as WAC 110-300-0245, which emphasizes cultural diversity and respectful communication with families. The big messages conveyed by these WACs regarding diversity and collaboration are the importance of recognizing and respecting cultural diversity, valuing individual family backgrounds, and engaging in open, respectful, and inclusive communication with families. These codes underscore the significance of creating an inclusive and welcoming environment that celebrates the uniqueness of each child and their family, fostering partnerships built on trust, collaboration, and cultural sensitivity to support the best interests of children in early learning programs.

Early learning providers must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. An early learning provider must intervene appropriately to stop biased behavior displayed by children or adults.
An early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals, as well as attempt to obtain information from each child’s family about that child’s developmental, behavioral, health, linguistic, cultural, social, and other relevant information.

MemberSeptember 28, 2023 at 4:47 amI would have the child come into the classroom and I would intrude him so that he or she feels comfortable . After I would have everyone go around taking turns explaining a little about themselves and there culture where there from etc. it’s important that each child knows a little bit about one another so that they can understand why some people may believe in some of the things they believe in .
