MemberOctober 8, 2023 at 9:58 pmWACs convey that childcare centers must be in communication with the families to understand the child’s background–cultural, developmental, and family wise. They must also be in contact with the family about developmental goals and how the child is doing. The program must have methods as to how best accommodate cultural and familial differences.

These opportunities must represent everyone, their family’s and their culture. The messages convey that all toys, color books, and games must represent all children. The WAC states that everything must be very inclusive. The learning providers must also make it their job to intervene when biased behavior is reflected by children or guardians, they must always refuse to ignore bias. The children’s experiences are so malleable and these experiences shape who they become. It’s more than important that every child feels safe and accepted.

Early learning providers MUST NOT discriminate in employment practices or client services based on race, creed, color, national origin, sex, honorably discharged veteran or military status, marital status, gender, sexual orientation, age, religion, or ability. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff.
A provider must use items such as diverse materials (dolls, clothing, etc.) and music in the child’s language, have a balance of different groups, and intervene to stop biased behaviors by anyone.
WAC 110-300-0085 addresses collaboration with families to help the child’s growth and development in the program.
WAC 110-300-0310 touches on facilitating activities to support child learning and understanding, including connecting concepts and activities to children’s lives, and encouraging communication in English and the child’s home language.2. Regarding diversity and collaboration, the WACs encourages them for each child to feel comfortable expressing themselves and for healthy growth. They help children learn acceptance of themselves(for a positice self-image) and others, and help them learn to live in harmony with others around them.

The WAC’s state that it is important to be welcoming to all people no matter what their background is. To make everyone feel included no matter what. Discrimination is unacceptable whether that’s by race, gender, or religious beliefs

MemberOctober 23, 2023 at 9:12 pmWAC 110-300-0160 clearly states that there should be a selection of dolls, books, and other materials that do not reinforce stereotypes, these being like pictures that only show kids with casual clothing and not formal clothing, or where only boys wear pants and girls can only wear dresses when really girls are also allowed to wear pants.
WAC 110-300-0315 also states that teachers in the classrooms should be aware of how the child responds to its developmental needs, as well as linguistic, cultural, and academic needs. for example, if a child is speaking in a different language, we do not as teachers want to discourage that self-talk but also try to talk along with them even if we have no idea what we are saying. we may translate it for our benefit of understanding, but we also want to make sure that the child knows that we are trying along with them.
