MemberNovember 11, 2023 at 4:40 am- Which WACs address diversity and collaboration with families? the whole book to start: Well informed, achievable, child-focused you can’t have any of these without diversity and collaboration. To come close to the purpose of this guidebook you have to be in collaboration with the families and understand about diversity and listen to what families have to say. Education is a WAC that addresses it because all childcare professionals have to take a diversity training to be better equipped to communicate and teach children of all backgrounds. Communication is another one, the WAC gives lots of resources and guidelines on how to communicate effectively and this includes the communication with families about their child’s care.
- What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration? The safety and education of the child is the top priority. With that the understanding of diversity and collaborating with the families is a huge portion of how to help in the development of the students. the biggest message is It is important and everyone needs to follow the guidelines that are given.

WAC and diversity: 110-300-0160, 110-300-0320, and 110-300-0325 these sections address diversity and acceptance in the classroom, while 110-300-0085 addresses collaboration and communication with families, including incorporation of diversity.
The big messages are children should feel valued for who they are and where they came from. They should feel like they belong in their classroom/school and they should be represented respected for their culture.

- What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration? How important it is for the children and the families, for programs to be diverse and inclusive. Families are the first teachers, and without working together to create an inclusive environment for the children, the children will not thrive.

The big message that I take away from the WACs that discuss diversity and collaboration are important. As a childcare provider, I want to know about each child and their family values. Also the more communication or collaboration between teachers and families will help adults better understand what is going on in the child’s life.

In welcoming a new child to the classroom and community, I would encourage them to create an “All About Me” page, bring in a meaningful item from their home, or my family poster which should help the class get to know the child more as well as initiating class discussions about everyone’s favorite foods, holidays, and exploring aspects of the child’s country of origin, such as music and educational tools, aims to enhance everyone’s learning experience while avoiding the child feeling singled out. By emphasizing shared interests and celebrating both commonalities and differences, we can create a positive and inclusive atmosphere in the classroom. This approach focuses on building connections and friendships based on mutual understanding and acceptance, fostering a supportive environment where diversity is appreciated.

MemberNovember 19, 2023 at 7:50 amThe importance of respecting the differences between families, beliefs and opinions is so important so that the child and their family feel included in that place. I have noticed when we show interest in culture, language and opinions, families feel loved and even more secure with the person who is taking care of their children. Whether you are the child of two mothers, two fathers, adopted, of different origins or an unknown culture for some, it doesn’t matter, we must respect everyone with their differences. One of the great messages that WACs always leaves is to RESPECT and collaborate with diversity so that everyone can feel included.

WAC 110-300-0085 was the only one I could find that really talks about collaboration with families and also includes diversity, was there any others that I missed? To answer the question though, this WAC really focuses on communication with parents/guardians, and learning about the child and their specific needs as well as their history, culture, language, and upbringing.

I realized that I missed some, such as WAC-300-0160 which talks about helping every child feel accepted and making sure there is a divers range of learning opportunities and tools. Making sure to prevent or intervene biased conversations and behavior in children and adults. I’m sure there are other WACs touching this topic as well.

MemberNovember 20, 2023 at 2:57 amHow would I welcome a child into class, help to celebrate their unique differences and help other children welcome and get to know this child?
I would have the child introduce themselves and share about their family, where they have come from, special foods they eat and even traditions they practice at home. I would make sure to include representative materials throughout the classroom and in the lesson plans and class activities. This includes books about the culture, picture books with characters that represent the student and their culture, talk about how different cultures are something to be celebrated and welcomed. Depending on age of students maybe talk about foods or music from that culture and bring a food from that culture and play music from that culture. Other children could welcome and get to know this child by including them in play and other activities as well as ask questions to have better understanding such as learning basic words in that language or even what it is like living in another part of the world.

MemberNovember 20, 2023 at 9:44 pmSpecifically, the WACs regarding diversity are 0030 Diversity; 0085 Family Partnerships and Communication, and 0160 Promoting Acceptance of Diversity. The message is that mere compliance with the law is not enough. While non-discrimination is the “floor” for how to behave as a provider, the WACs set higher expectations in that the individual child will be celebrated; that families will be valued and included in the development of the child, and that in being individually valued, children will be taught and expected to value others.
