<b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>2. The WAC 110-300-0160 conveys important messages about diversity and collaboration in early learning. It emphasizes the need for a welcoming environment by requiring providers to offer culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. This includes using materials that represent all children, families, and staff without reinforcing stereotypes, such as diverse dolls, books, and music from various cultures. The WAC also stresses the importance of balance in reflecting different ethnic and cultural groups, ages, abilities, family styles, and genders.

Additionally, the WAC outlines measures for early learning providers to address biased behavior. It encourages redirecting inappropriate conversations or behaviors, being aware of situations involving bias and responding appropriately, and refusing to ignore bias. These guidelines underscore a proactive approach to create an inclusive and respectful learning environment that actively promotes diversity and intervenes when biased behavior occurs.

Early learning providers must provide diverse learning opportunities that reflect the staff, children, and families. These can include books, toys, games, music, conversations. Early learning providers cannot exhibit biases and should not ignore biases but find opportunities to respond appropriately to them.

    2. What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?
The big message here is to consider ethnicity and culture when creating a curriculum, or filling a classroom with toys, books, etc. Not only for the purpose of inclusion but for education. So that now only will a student from a diverse background feel like they can belong and be apart of a team within the classroom, but for the other students to be made aware of different cultures, traditions, beliefs, etc.

The message it transmits is about inclusion, it motivates us to adapt as early learning centers to make the modifications that can be made to help in a friendly transition where children and family are the most important thing. In addition to inviting us to recognize these differences, it has non-discrimination message policies.

    1. The WACs that address diversity and family collaboration are 110-300-0160, 110-300-0325, and 110-300-0085.

    2. The big messages that WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration are that they should absolutely be encouraged to promote an inclusive environment. Parents/guardians care deeply about their children, and they are entrusting us with their wellbeing and proper development. With that responsibility in mind, we should ensure that we teach them with a multicultural lens that respects the family’s background and promotes diversity.
