As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, the specific Washington Administrative Codes (WACs) related to diversity and collaboration with families in early childhood education may have been updated or changed. It’s essential to refer to the most recent and relevant WAC documents for accurate information.

In general, WACs related to early childhood education often emphasize the importance of providing culturally responsive and inclusive practices. These may include guidelines on accommodating diverse cultural backgrounds, languages, and individual needs within educational settings.

For specific information, you can visit the official website of the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) or contact them directly. They can provide you with the latest versions of the WACs and information on how diversity and collaboration with families are addressed in the regulations.

The big messages in WACs regarding diversity and collaboration typically revolve around:

    1. Inclusion: Encouraging inclusive practices that respect and celebrate diversity, recognizing the uniqueness of each child and family.

    2. Cultural Competence: Promoting cultural competence among educators and staff to effectively engage with families from diverse backgrounds.

    3. Communication: Highlighting the importance of open and effective communication between educators and families, considering language and cultural differences.

    4. Collaboration: Emphasizing the collaboration between educators and families to support the child’s holistic development, including their cultural, linguistic, and individual needs.

110-300-0160 address diversity and acceptance in the classroom, while 110-300-0085 addresses collaboration and communication with families, including incorporation of diversity. The expectation is that all children must feel represented and accepted in the classroom, and incorporating the cultural practices of their home lives helps them to learn and develop in the classroom as well.

It’s very important to make sure both the children and the parents feel welcome in the environment. Being open about yourself while also showing a willingness to listen to their views are great ways to start developing a bond and a safe environment for all those involved. Finding ways to appease new comers using all the senses can also show your willingness to do what it takes to help both children and their families.

WAC 110-300-0160 promotes cultural and racial diversity learning opportunities offered to the children. Our curriculum, lesson plans, activities and materials prepared should fit children with different abilities. Working with families should be the same. We should always have the open acceptance attitude where families feel inclusive through communications, interactions, etc.

1: In WAC 110-300-0160, it addresses diversity that early educators must provide.

2: It says to use things such as diverse dolls, books, pictures, and games that don’t reinforce stereotypes, as well as having diverse music that is in the family languages.

What messages do the WACs convey regarding diversity and collaboration?

The messages the WACs convey regarding diversity and collaboration are supported by early learning providers being required to provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff WAC 110-300-160.

Additionally, as outlined in the Foundation Quality standards booklet WAC as an acronym is a program that is Well informed, Achievable, and Child Focused. Supporting children of all background to thrive in their environment regardless of circumstance.

How I would welcome a new student into my class is by asking their name, age and just making them feel welcomed, loved and cared about. You don’t know what happens at home. My classroom is a safe space. I would also try and get to know them, ask them what their interests are etc.

To welcome a new child into class and celebrate their unique differences, greet them warmly, highlight their cultural background, and encourage sharing among peers through activities like show and tell. Foster inclusivity by implementing a buddy system, promoting language support, and engaging parents, creating a positive and supportive environment that encourages understanding and friendship among all children. As well as WAC 110-300-0610 stating the need for cultural and racially diverse activities such as reading books with different main characters and diverse music.

Children will observe me, not only the new child but the rest of the class.Children may observe me expressing different points of view and practicing different daily activities than those they are most familiar with. It’s important to learn from families and celebrate the differences. WAC 181-78A-220 and WAC 110-301-0160 deal with diversity in WA schools. There are also gender inclusive schools, and training in diversity is required for all teachers at all levels.

I would meet with parents and an advocate, learn about the child and how I can communicate basic needs with them, and take suggestions from the advocate. Putting parents in touch with others in their situation is helpful.

In anticipating a new student, I would collaborate with the children for ideas on how to welcome them, work on a buddy system, and focus on learning names. A day or two of unique activities to help everyone feel included and successful. I have to remember that I already have children with needs in class, and celebrating our uniqueness would be good for everyone.

If what I do is genuine, not just a show, children sense that. All children can shine at something. It’s also having the expectation that mistakes are OK, that we learn from them, and that we collaborate to get things done. Helping is extended from everyone to everyone.

WAC 110-300-0160 is titled “Promoting acceptance of diversity.”

It focuses on creating a diverse and welcoming environment that allows every student in our program to be able to share about their life, family, and culture. This includes providing diverse dolls, toys, posters and books that do not perpetuate stereotypes, as well as different types of cultural music, and educational materials. And finally we must also be constantly aware of our own biases

In WAC 110-300-0160, it states as an early learning provider you must provide a diverse and inclusive environment for students of all cultures and race.

It gives many suggestions such as keeping your group diverse and provide dolls, music, books, posters, and games that reinforce culture but not stereotypes. It also says to stop inappropriate and discriminating behavior when we see it.

That EC program must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities, this includes how children and families are represented in the curriculum, activities, and materials. This could mean diverse images and believes in books and play materials, in the music or language that is encouraged, and an acknowledgment of different family systems in ways we interact with the child. Teachers in such program will be conscious of explicit and implicit bias and speak up and intervene when negative bias arises.

How I would be able to welcome a new child into my classroom and following the WAC guideline’s I would make sure that they are able to express themselves and believe that they belong where they are. I would also use what I know about diversity and being able to include it in the day to day in the classroom so that the children are used to the culture
