WAC 170-296A-6050 talks about how guidance and discipline must be culturally informed:
The licensee and staff must use consistent, fair and positive guidance and discipline methods. These methods must be appropriate to the child’s developmental level, abilities, culture and are related to the child’s behavior

    1. Several provisions of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) for early learning and child care deal with diversity and working with families. It highlights how crucial it is to acknowledge and value the many cultural origins of people, including families in their child’s education, and offer language access services so that people can communicate effectively.

    2. Additionally, WACs may mandate or support inclusive curriculum that take into account the variety of kids and families. In order to guarantee that staff members connect with families from diverse backgrounds in an effective manner, cultural competency training is frequently stressed. The main takeaway is to provide welcoming, culturally sensitive spaces that celebrate and uphold the differences among all kids and their families.

The WACs likely reflect a commitment to creating early learning environments that are diverse, inclusive, and collaborative, with a focus on meeting the unique needs of each child and fostering positive relationships with families.

The WACs are very clear about showing creating a diverse environment in the program. WAC 110-300-0160 is all about promoting acceptance of diversity. It indicates that a provider MUST provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. This must be demonstrated in the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. WAC 110-300-0085 also dictates that an early learning provider must attempt to obtain information from each child’s family about their developmental, behavioral, health, linguistic, cultural, social and other relevant information.

The big message that the WACs give on diversity and collaboration is that it is critical to create a diverse environment for children and to work along side the family.

In WAC 100-300-0160 it says: early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Those opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. Things like books, pictures, games, and toys would be a good example to incorporate in the classroom for children. Furthermore, I think the most important thing in creating and upholding and friendly and welcoming environment to all is communication with families. Every family has a different way that they show and incorporate their culture into their lives. it is our job as caretakers to show our cultural respect by doing what we can to carrying on the traditions they do with their family’s at home. whether it’s praying at lunch, or eating a meal a specific way, helping the child feel safe and especially excepted while doing these things and showing these examples is the biggest way to accept a diverse crowd.

WAC 110-300-0160 discusses this. It specifically specifies that care providers “must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff.” It provides some examples like diverse dolls, books, and music.

I would motivate children to make a piece of art that speaks to who they are and their background I would remind them to be confident of who they are and that they don’t need to change anything about themselves. It would be fun to have a child each week bring in something of their background and explain why it is important. Inviting parents to participate in projects like the above would help their child feel more at home.

WAC 110-300-0160 states that early childcare providers must provide learning opportunities that are culturally/ racially diverse in their curriculums, activities, and materials. That includes things around the classroom that don’t reinforce stereotypes, diverse music, and intervening when biased behavior is displayed.

WAC states that there should be learning opportunities that diverse in activities and material. I would ask the family maybe in a worksheet where they can write anything about themselves that i think is important to know when a new child arrives. if the child only speaks their native language i will make sure to be able to communicate with child mayne ask parents basic communication to teach me to make child be confortable. make an effort to learn more about the childs culture and implement int my day to day activities like in the food served or talking about it through books or posters.

    1. Washington Administrative Code 110-300-0100: Collaboration with families and communities.

    2. WAC 110-300-0200: Cultural diversity must be respected.

These WACs’ main messages are about valuing other cultures, including families in their children’s education, and building partnerships between programs and families to assist children’s learning.

In Washington State, the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) addresses diversity and collaboration with families in early learning programs through various sections.

WAC 110-300-0160 – Promoting Acceptance of Diversity: This section emphasizes the importance of providing culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities in early learning settings. It requires that the curriculum, activities, and materials represent all children, families, and staff, and do not reinforce stereotypes. This includes the use of diverse dolls, books, pictures, games, music in children’s primary languages, and ensuring a balance of different ethnic and cultural groups, ages, abilities, family styles, and genders. Additionally, this section mandates intervention in instances of biased behavior displayed by children or adults.

WAC 110-300-0085 – Family Partnerships and Communication: This section outlines the necessity for early learning providers to communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals. Providers must gather information from each child’s family regarding the child’s developmental, behavioral, health, linguistic, cultural, social, and other relevant aspects. The goal is to best accommodate each child’s individual characteristics, strengths, and needs, using this information and seeking input from family members and staff.

WAC 110-300-0450 – Parent or Guardian Handbook and Related Policies: This section mandates that early learning providers supply parents or guardians with written policies regarding the early learning program. It includes a comprehensive set of policies covering a wide range of aspects from nondiscrimination statements, family engagement and partnership communication plans, to emergency preparedness and reporting duties.

The overallmessages from these WACs regarding diversity and collaboration are clear:

Early learning providers must actively work towards creating an environment where all children feel represented and accepted.

Embracing the cultural practices and backgrounds of families is vital in helping children learn and develop. Effective communication and collaboration with families are key components in achieving these goals.

The WACs state that children should be given opportunities to share their traditions and customs. Children should be taught about diversity and be in an environment where our diverse attributes are celebrated.
