Throughout this module I have gained a deeper understanding on WAC’s and the important role they play for childcare in Washington State. WACs which stands for Washington Administrative Code are a set of codes and regulations that must be followed in order to become a licensed childcare facility. Theses are created/set through the RCW (Revised Code of Washington). I learned that WACs are needed in order that the children/students of Washington are receiving an education that is high-quality, cohesive, and healthy. WAC 110-300 in specific was created due to a lack of organization in Early Learning Programs that ranged from home-care to school districts. Through this specific WAC, guidelines were created that are directly correlated with WHO, WHAT, and WHERE an early learning program can be organized. I was not surprised by any of WACs however, I was surprised at the thoroughness in all the sub-section. It must be made clear that these sub-sections are incredibly important, yet before I had read them it did not cross my mind to have that regulation in place. The details are knit-picked down to the hours the child is enrolled, or whether a parent is on campus for the activities. I do realize the importance of WACs and it is quite clear that these regulations influence the day-to-day practice of the expectations in caring for students.

Upon reviewing WAC Chapter 110-300, I discovered a comprehensive framework designed to ensure the safety and well-being of children in care settings. One unexpected aspect was the emphasis on staff qualifications and ongoing training, which highlighted the importance of professional development in creating a nurturing environment. These regulations will significantly influence my daily practice by establishing standards for safety, supervision, and interactions with children. By adhering to these guidelines, I can cultivate a more structured and supportive atmosphere that fosters positive growth and learning, ultimately enhancing the quality of care I provide.

I wasn’t really surprised by most of the WACs, but I did notice how specific they are about things like sleep equipment, training requirements, and daily routines. I can definitely see how they shape day-to-day practice, because they guide everything from how we interact with families to how we set up safe and consistent environments for kids.

    1) What I discovered about WAC is that it can establish a licensed site in a private family residence as long as the area that is being licensed is accessible to only children and the staff taking care of them during operating hours and is separated from living quarters. I wonder if this is just for apartment complexes or if other living centers also fall into this.2) WAC didn’t shock me because I’ve worked in childcare for four years now- whether it be with children in elementary or teenagers. No matter where I worked we had many regulations and rules to keep the youths safe. 3) Yes, I will make sure anyone interacting with the kids is either a licensed member or family.

Reading through the WAC’s, I was relieved to see how detailed they were because you never want a child or a child’s certain behaviors or needs slip through the cracks.

    1. I discovered that the WAC’s weren’t just about the trainings and safety but also about so much more. Like things that have to do with how we treat other staff and how to go about certain situations we might face as childcare providers. 2. I was just surprised mainly on how straight forward they were, they went into detail without writing a whole lot.3.Yes, I can see how they do. This is because of the fact that there is stuff about ratios and the things we need to do as a licensed center in the classrooms, even if we don’t exactly know we are WACs are being used daily.
