For the WAC Hunt activity, I explored WAC 110-300, which outlines the licensing requirements for child care centers in Washington State. One WAC that stood out to me was the section on supervision. It emphasized the importance of children being within sight and sound of staff at all times, which really shows how seriously safety is taken in early learning environments. This WAC matters to me because I work in a daycare center with young children, and constant supervision is key to keeping them safe and supported. Doing this activity helped me understand how WACs are not just rules, but important guidelines that protect both kids and staff.

The WACs list I’m sure is ever growing, and for every rule made it was because someone got hurt or something happened, so I’m not surprised at how detailed and encompassing the list is.

During the activity I discovered that WACs existed. I had no idea there were rules and standards before I began this discussion. I was not surprised by an WACs rather than just happy they are there and that there are rules to help protect children.I do see WACs influence day to day care of children. I have only babysat before this so I did not know there were rules and standards to childcare like this but now that I know I see how the WACs can help benefit both the children and the people who work there.

I was not surprised by many of the WACs however I was surprised by how thorough the WACs were in regards to home licensing, as well as some of the required documentation listed in <b style=”font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; -webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;”>WAC 110-300-0460.

I discovered that there are more in-depth things than someone might expect to see when first reading the WACs. I was a bit surprised about how there is a difference between the ratio of child to staff when working in a private home or house is different than working in a site or at one of the primary buildings. I can see that the WACs will influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children because even as simple as letting a child get some water or go to the restroom I will still need to be in view of others or even have someone assist me when taking a child.

After reading the WAC 110-300, I didn’t really learn anything new, but it was a great refresher. I also wasn’t really surprised either. I think the WAC 110-300 helps provide structure and insight on what to do during day-to-day activities.

Completing the WACs activities I discovered a comprehensive set of rules and guidelines that ensure the safety, health, and well-being of children in care. I wouldn’t say that I was surprised by any of the WACs, but I like how in depth they all went with how everything and how well they describe everything. The WACs influence by establishing regulations and standards for safety, health, and quality.

I found out that explains that anyone providing regular child care or early learning services to children from birth through age 12 in Washington State must be licensed by the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), unless they qualify for an exemption. I was surprised by some but I can see why it’s important. I can see how it can influence the day-to day for child care.

I learned that the guidelines are very detailed and directly impact daily child care practices. I was surprised by how specific some rules are, especially around rest time, training, and care hours. These regulations clearly influence how we plan, supervise, and interact with children to ensure a safe, high-quality environment.

I discovered child care that is conducted in a private residence is required to have a license. For preschool children who are in the care of an individual for 4 or more hours, that facility requires a license as well. I found it interesting, not necessarily surprising, that if you are providing child care from a private home you need to have an area for child care that is separate from the private living quarters. The WACs will provide a solid structure for child care programs in Washington State, and ensures there is a baseline expectation for safety.

I learned that a license is required for early learning services for children from birth through 12 years of age. I wasn’t particularly surprised by any of the WACs. I think it would influence practices by making them more professional, as you need to get certifications to be licensed.

The WAC is the framework that specifies how a facility should run to produce optimal outcomes for the children in attendance. One of the surprising things that I saw is how many more regulations there seem to be compared to my home state of California. With this set of guide-lines, it makes it clear as to how a ECE center should run and should hopefully make it clear-cut for others as well.

WAC 110-30 states that “an individual or entity that provides child care and early learning services for a group of children, birth through 12 years, must be licensed.” The WACs aren’t surprising for me, as I think they do a great job of laying a framework intended to keep children safe and ensure standardized, ethical, responsible, and diverse classrooms. That said, I think that it’s important, as an individual in the field, to be familiar with the WACs and consistently revisit them to ensure that your care is upholding these standards.
