MemberJanuary 10, 2024 at 5:54 pmBeing a mandated reporter, if I suspect abuse I must report it with that being said my care center has certain policies around reporting abuse, especially if it’s found within our program. First, creating a document with the details of suspected abuse and evidence. As well as the children’s name and families, name and contact adding if they are part of a specific ethnic group or tribe. Then I would hand it to my higher-ups to review at handle before I make my real report.

MemberJanuary 11, 2024 at 7:39 amIf you suspect child abuse or neglect call 1-866-ENDHARM. The ENDHARM intake line is answered by trained staff who can discuss your concerns. Mandated reporters play a critical role in preventing any future harm to children. Making a report means a request for help when there is suspicion and does not necessarily mean a proven fact. It can begin a process that can help parents learn to care for and protect their own children.

MemberJanuary 11, 2024 at 5:23 pmIf you suspect abuse you must report it. This does not mean you need to know that abuse is occurring and it is not the educators job to investigate or do any legal action. Once you report the suspected abuse or neglect to the state they will decide whether or not to open a case.

MemberJanuary 11, 2024 at 7:43 pmI have done this before, reporting to both my Lead and the Director, and they took it from there. I admit I am nervous about making a call like that myself, but thy both have more experience with handling those situations.

MemberJanuary 11, 2024 at 10:40 pmTo protect the kid, respond quickly if you have any suspicions of abuse or neglect. In the event that the child is in urgent danger, call 911. Notify the appropriate authorities or your local child protective services of your concerns, along with comprehensive details on the kid, caretakers, and any suspected abuse or neglect. As you adhere to the particular reporting guidelines provided by your local authorities, keep your identity private at all times. Keep a journal of your observations, noting dates and particular actions. Participate completely in any inquiries that child protective services may launch. Give the child emotional support and reassurance that they are not alone if at all possible. Recall that raising suspicions is a responsible and required first step in ensuring the child’s safety. If in doubt, get advice from local authorities or hotlines.

MemberJanuary 12, 2024 at 11:23 pmAsk the child what happened first, investigate and then do the steps that are required. If I see with my own eyes that somebody’s is being abused or neglected I will say something about it and report it.

If I suspect a child is abused or neglected in my class first i would check with my lead teacher for another opinion and if we think its true will go to our director and follow the procedure to report the case to CPS.

MemberJanuary 22, 2024 at 7:58 pmFollow the steps that have been listed. Such as make the report and make sure to note down the reason for my suspicions.
I am particularly focused on the part of reasonable. Sometimes, I think it is important to handle these things with grace and understanding just in the case there might be a misunderstanding. I’ve witnessed situations where multiple staff members were putting in CPS reports on a particular family because of certain things that the kid said that to me didn’t seem reasonable to follow up with a report with and I was confused. When talking with the parent afterwards, there were multiple investigations done with her and they found nothing. From then, parent had an extreme distrust with our staff, because it also seemed to stem from racial biases that were being left unchecked. It was a serious and tense situation that I wouldn’t want to repeat ever.
