First of all children’s safety and health all come first, therefore, if I suspect abuse with any of abuse with my students. My first step would bring it document it and then bring my concern to the program director as she would have the best call on the situation.

If I suspected child abuse or neglect, I would talk with my supervisor about it to see if it is worth reporting and document it.

Repot this to the appropriate authorities. I can also contact the local child protective services.

If I suspected child abuse call the helpline and make my supervisor aware of what I suspected.

As a mandated reporter first document the report and call the respective authorities, and report the incident.

If a child tells you they are experiencing abuse, it’s important to reassure them that they’ve done the right thing in telling you. Make sure they know that abuse is never their fault. Never talk to the alleged perpetrator about the child’s disclosure. This could make things a lot worse for the child.

The second we sign up for an educator job we are responsible for reporting ANY signs of abuse. I we suspect abuse it is our duty to contact CPS and take it from there and if the danger seems more imminent then we are to contact the police. Children are our number 1 priority.

Be gentle and careful when speaking to the child (when applicable) and remember that it is not my job to interview them or press for details. If I am unsure of what to do I think I would ask a supervisor or coworker who also works closely with the child to speak privately and ask if they have noticed the same/similar concerns. Then if I continue to have concerns that the child may be being abused or neglected I know from other trainings I have received that it’s a good idea to gather a small amount of basic information before making the call namely things like the child’s full (first and last) name, and the full names of the parent/s or family member/s that are responsible for the child (but if you can’t get ahold of that information you should still call anyways as soon as you can, just that it can be helpful). If I suspect the child is in imminent danger of serious harm that needs to be addressed then I would be sure to say so when I make the call and probably ask if I need to call the police or other authorities as well.

If I suspect a child is abused or neglected I would first check with my superior about the correct steps to take in case there are specific actions that I must also do. Next I would immediately contact CPS and make a report. I wouldn’t inform the parents. If I know the child is in immediate danger, I would immediately contact the local law enforcement after contacting CPS.
