Call CPS immediately. Even if it turns out to be a misunderstanding or an accident, it is better to be safe than sorry.

The law says you must immediately report the circumstances. If the suspected child abuse or neglect involves you or your staff, you must inform your licensor. You must contact CPS if you even suspect that certain injuries or bruises may be accidental. You must contact CPS if you see signs of emotional or sexual abuse or physical neglect. Even if you have made a report to CPS about a particular child earlier, you must report each new injury or incident. Do not attempt to interview the child or to manage the situation yourself. Both interviewing and investigating are the responsibility of CPS. Child abuse is a very serious matter, I would follow the law exactly

MemberMarch 31, 2023 at 5:35 amIf I suspected child abuse I would first report it to my director, and hope she can guide me on what my next moves are. If my director agrees with my observations, I would report it to CPS.

MemberMarch 31, 2023 at 9:39 pmIf I suspected child abuse or neglect I would first do three things. To start, I would discuss with my coworkers and supervisor if this meets the criteria for child abuse/neglect. Then, I would file a CPS report and record the case number for follow up. Lastly, I would inform my direct supervisor and provide them with the case number in case of follow up.

MemberApril 4, 2023 at 4:01 amI’d ask some subtle questions of the child if they could speak, perhaps even the parent covertly, and to another teacher or director before making a call.

Document any signs of abuse or neglect that I observed. Also make sure to write down the date, time, and description of any incidents, injuries, or behaviors that concern me. Share my concerns with my supervisor or the designated person that I need to report abuse or neglect. Contact the appropriate authorities immediately to report my suspicions.

Thank you. Documentation is a very important element of the process.
