MemberApril 11, 2023 at 4:50 pmI want to protect the children in my care as much as possible. This question is a challenging one for me as in the past it didn’t end well when i reported too soon. At this point, I feel that it is best to speak to my supervisor first and see what steps i need to take before i make any necessary calls.

I would assess the situation, communicate with my Lead or Director and make the call to CPS on behalf of the child.

For example, I would ass, “Why are you scared to go home? ” “Who hurt you?” Next, I would bring my directors attention. Have my director talk to them. I would not call the CPS right away because you will need proof and the parents will not cooperate.
I went through this in the past and my old director did not like the process, the parents were not cooperative after the director calling the CPS, because the parents do not want to loose their child. Plus, CPS will have to talk to the child by themselves, and some investigating around the parents home. Once they decide to go to court, this involves a lot of paper work and proof, and cost a lot of money to go court.

MemberApril 16, 2023 at 2:44 amI would start first with documentation. I would discuss my thoughts with my co teacher, and I would inform my director and show my documentations. If I felt it was not being handled as should be, I would then contact the proper authorities.

as someone who works with children, children are my first priority, and I would rather be safe and wrong, then not do anything to help them at all.

If I suspect child abuse or neglect, report my suspicions to the appropriate authorities like Child Protective Services or law enforcement. Document any observations or concerns I have about the child’s safety or well-being. Ensure the safety of the child by providing a safe place for them, and follow up with the appropriate authorities to ensure that the child’s safety is being addressed.

MemberMay 10, 2023 at 9:04 pmI believe over time you get to know the child and their parents so if there is anything out of the norm that comes up, you should notice something. The last thing you want to do is report something that is not true. I would likely discuss with other providers that work with the child to see what they have noticed. Children should be protected from any source of harm so making the appropriate calls once you have evidence is the right thing to do.
