A fun way to make hand washing fun and exciting is by creating a fun and up beat hand washing song to sing along with the children when it’s time to wash hands, that they will hopefully learn along the way. Another great way is creating a visual experience right above the sink, for example a fun and colorful chart with pictures showing the steps of hand washing.

Playing a “stamp game” can be a fun way to encourage vigorous and thorough hand washing with children. You can stamp a fun design on the back of each child’s hand at the beginning of class or aftercare and see which students can have the image removed by the end of the day by hand washing with intent!

I think it would be fun to show the kids a cute cartoon video of germs and the importance of washing hands and then using fun soaps or something to simulate soap to practice washing hands for a full 30 seconds.

Singing the ABCs with them is a good way to make sure the kids wash their hands long enough!

    1. “Bubble Hunt” Game
Ask the kids how many bubbles they can make while washing. They naturally scrub longer because they want to make more bubbles.2. Handwashing Songs
Use quick songs like the ABCs or make up a short tune. Singing helps them wash for the full 20 seconds without feeling rushed.3. Superhero Hands
Tell them the soap gives them “superpowers” to wash away the “germ villains.” They scrub between fingers and backs of hands to “catch” all the germs.4. Glitter Germ Challenge
Put a tiny bit of glitter on your hands or show them glitter and say, “Let’s see if soap and water can wash it all off.” It helps them understand why washing matters.5. Themed Sink Stations
Give each sink a fun theme or name like Dino Sink, Robot Sink, or Rainbow Sink. Kids get excited to pick their station.6. Beat the Timer
Set a simple 20-second timer. Tell them to scrub until the timer goes off. It turns handwashing into a quick game.7. Mirror Faces
Have kids make silly faces in the mirror while washing. It keeps them engaged and helps them stay at the sink long enough.8. Praise and Routines
Create a routine where kids feel proud of washing well. Say things like, “You did a great job washing all the way to your wrists.” It builds positive habits.

I like to sing a song or use visual aids to help the students know what to do and make it a more engaging experience.

My favorite hands-on science activity is making oobleck with the kids. They are able to experience it from the beginning till the end. From mixing the ingredients to seeing the changes, and feeling it with different pressure.

Para que lavarse las manos sea divertido para los niños, usa jabones de colores y formas, inventa canciones, juega a hacer burbujas, crea un sistema de recompensas y cuenta historias sobre gérmenes.

With school-age children, I like to discuss what diseases they know about and add information about why handwashing is important. Children like science facts and to learn how handwashing has a direct impact on their health.

Singing songs while you wash your hands, like singing happy birthday or counting to 20 in another language.

A fun way to keep kids engaged in washing their hands would be to treat it like a copycat game and have the kids follow my lead.
