Limitations on screen time is important in making sure a kid develops their own skills through pretend or active play. Leaving a kid with a tablet and a playlist full of online videos is no way to engage a child and teach them appropriately.

  • Communication and reliability are two great ways to create a “serve and return” environment for your kids. Positive reinforcement, two-way communication, and consistency all develop trust and support the educational procress.

As this childcare program ostensibly has rules and guidelines about how long the program is allowed to care for a child, a conversation between a staff member and Mrs. Hopkins is in order. For one, the kid’s upset and hates staying alone. A more direct affront to the program rules would be consistently coming by late – a firm talking-to about pick-up times and incurring extra cost is both appropriate and necessary. Of course, this is not presented in an accusatory or hateful way.

    1. The WACs 110-300-0030, 110-300-0160, and 110-300-0300 all address inclusion and equity of care – that is, respecting different cultures and diversity.

    2. The biggest message that these WACs convey is that there’s no cultural discrimination to be had when it comes to education, and steps should be taken in order to support diversity. Knowing a child’s background could be vital to understanding their behavior.

If someone is a reasonable person, their mind can be changed with facts and evidence. For example, you could prove to a normal person that the Earth is flat. Unreasonable people – like Flat Earthers – are unwilling (perhaps unable) to believe dissenting information, even when presented with overwhelming amounts of it.

In order to encourage cultural acknowledgment, a cultural show-and-tell would be a fun way for kids to share more about their backgrounds and themselves. Demonstrating the uniqueness of every child’s personal culture gives them the ability to appreciate their heritage all the more. In addition, it shows the families that you’re willing to adapt to better educate or care for children.

    1. I learned that the WACs are vital to following procedure when it comes to childcare, and cover a wide array of topics, from disaster preparedness to rules surrounding electronics.

    2. I was surprised to learn that there were specific laws pertaining to maintaining gardens in childcare spaces – testing for contaminants, restrictions on what to plant, etc.

    3. As the official legal guidelines for childcare in Washington, I expect the WACs to come into play almost nonstop; after all, we’ll be working with kids the whole time, so we’ll be using the same rules.
