  • One way to get children to engage is to come up with group activities like planting or cooking. This way the children would get to interact with each other and cooperate.

Having schedule and routine is very important because children know what to expect. It should include breakfast, circle time, playtime, outdoor play, lunch, rest time, snack time.

It’s Important to have a variety of activities for the children to choose from. By having different activities, the children can develop skills in multiple areas such as math skills, musical skills, reading skills and more.

  • A good way to approach a parent about this is to prepare beforehand by documenting what you’re observing, like ways their child can further grow and how they’re developing, so the parent can have a clear idea about their child and how to proceed with that information.

  • Observing and documenting a child’s development helps early learning providers give extra help and assistance in areas that a child might have trouble with, and understand their strengths to build on that. They can modify activities to help child development.

This is the third time in the last two weeks that Mrs. Hopkins has pickup her child late. Today she did not arrive until 20 minutes after closing time. What would you do?

I would first review our program policy with Mrs. Hopkins while also asking if there is something going on. It’s possible that she would like to change the hours for her students. However, Mrs. Hopkins has to respect the hours of the program and it will be communicated with her that our program closing time can’t be extended. Staff can’t always stay late with the child as they also have other responsibilities.

    1. I learned that there were a lot of requirements and guidelines to follow. there was some that I had knowledge about and some that I didn’t know.

    2. WAC 110-300-0465 states that attendance records must be kept for a minimum of 5 years. This was something that I wasn’t aware of.

    3. I can see how the WACs will influence my day to day practice in caring for children because it serves as a reference to the questions I might have.
