  • Observing and documenting a child’s development helps early learning providers by allowing them to better understand the child and what they need to do for the child to grow and succeed.

My thoughts on screen time for children in childcare is that they should save that time for home. While they are at school, they should be playing with peers, using their imagination, and exploring. Relying on screentime at school will take away these growth opportunities for children.

  • Early learning providers can create a “serve and return” environment in their classrooms by interacting with children as they play. The caregiver can notice how the child is interacting with the toy and interact back by clarifying words that are specific to that toy. An example would be the child pointing to a cow plushy and saying “moo” and the teacher saying in response “Cows say moo”.

I would start the conversation by talking about how excited her child is to see her after being at the care facility all day. Next, I would discuss with her the severity of being 20 minutes late and how I want to work with her to come up with a solution that works best for ALL of us. I would ask if there is any way I can better support her or her child so she is able to arrive on time.

Which WACs address diversity and collaboration with families?

    WAC 110-300-0330
    (1) An early learning provider must work to
maintain positive relationships with children by
using consistent guidance techniques to help
children learn. Guidance techniques must adapt an
    early learning program’s environment, routines,
and activities to a child’s strengths, developmental
level, abilities, culture, community, and relate to the
    child’s behavior.

    WAC 170-296A-6050
The licensee and staff must use consistent, fair
and positive guidance and discipline methods.
These methods must be appropriate to the
child’s developmental level, abilities, culture and
are related to the child’s behavior.

WAC 110-300-0085 Family partnerships and communication. (1) An
early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals.

What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?

A big message the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration is that staff and families must work together to ensure students are receiving adequate support, resources, and a learning environment that is engaging. Another factor that stands out is that each child is unique and promoting diversity and collaboration with families is what will make ALL students successful.
