we sometimes do stretches, yoga and breathing exercises, especially if the class needs to calm down before circle time. When we can’t go outside, we play kid-appropriate music and we have dance parties, sometimes with disco lights and colored scarves to make it more fun

I like to sing little songs about whatever we are doing, or giving directions (go potty, wash your hands, etc) in a sing song voice. That seems to make it fun for them. I also like to point out fun things about what we are eating (Navel oranges have “belly buttons” and broccoli looks like trees) and that encourages children to eat them more.

A positive attitude as well as empathy and understanding is important for creating and maintaining relationships with families. Come to an agreement on things that might need more support with a child and come up with a solution to a problem if needed

Daily schedules should include routine parts of the day such as snack, lunch, nap, outside play, etc. Schedules should be posted with pictures and reviewed with children so they know what to expect throughout the day.

Some components of a good early learning center are areas that promote curiosity, socialization, physical growth, and quiet areas. The room should be warm and inviting, and a place that children want to come back to every day.

I would prepare myself to talk with the parent and identify key points that I want to discuss with them. Creating a script of what I want to say can help make the process easier. I would ask the parent if they wanted to discuss anything further or if they had questions about a particular point. I would then have a list of resources, if needed, to give to the parent for more assistance in navigating the process of getting services, if needed.

I would explain to the parent that being consistently and severely late impacts the child more than they might realize. Children are often at a childcare center from the moment doors open to the second they close, and they miss their families while they are there. Being the last one at a center can be stressful and scary for a child, especially if it is for a long period such as 20 minutes. I would also explain that the parents severe lateness also impacts staff as well. Staff have also been at the center for long hours and they want to go home just as much as the children in their care do. Staff have lives, families and responsibilities outside of the childcare center. I have heard of late fees needing to be given to parents that do not care to pick up their child on time. We may also need to figure out a different plan or discuss different school options if this continues, and special accommodations may be made if the parent is late because of timing conflicts at their work.

I discovered that there were so many codes and so many regulations in place and I found it interesting that some things even had to be made into rules and standards. I wasn’t really surprised by any, but I did find it amazing that centers and programs are required to keep records of everything for many, many years. This is important though, because everything that happens in a childcare center is designed so that children and their families are well taken care of and safe.
