There are many different ways that screen time can be beneficial to children during lessons, It is important to make sure that the time spent with a “screen” is used for active engagement, not as a substitute for the teacher.

The process/protocol is important and should be followed carefully. Be sure to include your supervisor in all situations and document all conversations and actions.

Be very careful about divulging confidential information to anyone that is not directly involved with the child. Talking can definitely help, but caution with details is advised.

Thank you, these are good details. It’s a good idea to have this information in writing also so that you can document that the conversation took place.

Be sure that the child is ready to make decisions. You should be aware of whether they need time to deescalate from the outburst before they can think for themselves.

Be sure that the child has the vocabulary necessary to communicate what they are feeling. Work some practice sessions into your lessons so they can be confident when they try to explain how they are feeling. This is a lifelong process.

Talking to each parent every day is an impossible task. You may be busy or they may be in a hurry to get someplace else. Let parents know that you are always interested in discussing their child and will make time when they or you would like to have a conversation.

Be careful about “making” children do something they may not be ready to do. Giving them opportunities to express themselves and allow them to share is more effective.

Be sure that young children are at a stage where they are capable of the advanced conversation that you are asking them to explain. Emotions are difficult to pinpoint and describe for little people. Observations and role playing are effective methods.
