  • Observing and documenting a child helps providers because we now understand the needs/wants of the child but also their interests. This will allow us to teach in ways that can focus on that specific child’s they can best absorb what is being taught and thrive in the environment they are in.

Screen time is not a necessary tool to utilize within a child care facility. There are systems and processes in place to allow to breaks for staff and schedules to maintain for the students including crafts, meals, outdoor time, ect that should be used first. Screentime is something that can be saved for parents/caregivers in an in home setting.

Serve and Return can be utilized in many different ways within the classroom, through arts and crafts, circle time, or even during free play and engaging a child in their own interests. All present opportunities for serve and return.

    1. Which WACs address diversity and collaboration with families?
      “<b style=”background-color: var(–bb-content-background-color); font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit; color: var(–bb-body-text-color);”>WAC 110-300-0160

      Promoting acceptance of diversity.

      (1) An early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. A provider must use equipment and materials that include, but are not limited to..”

    2. What big messages do the WACs give regarding diversity and collaboration?
The big message here is to consider ethnicity and culture when creating a curriculum, or filling a classroom with toys, books, etc. Not only for the purpose of inclusion but for education. So that now only will a student from a diverse background feel like they can belong and be apart of a team within the classroom, but for the other students to be made aware of different cultures, traditions, beliefs, etc.

    1. What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? &
    2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs?
    3. There are so many WACs out there, many of them are surprising, mostly regarding business that I wouldn’t have thought about had I not come across it. For example if a facility will be closed for 30 days or more they must give written notice.

    4. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?
    5. Yes and no. It is so important to become aware to protect yourself, the facility, and the most importantly the kiddos. However some of the rules and regulations regarding the operation of the facility is obscure and definitely apart of my day to day. However the rules and regulations that directly affect how I interact with the students will influence me.
