I think the key to approach developmental screening with parents is to make it as something normal to go over through the year. Since parents can be sensitive when receiving red flags about their child development, it is vital to be well prepared. Teachers should be knowledgeable about children development stages and keep organized records of the classroom screening documentation of each child, so they can support their statements and provide data if necessary. It is also important that you confide this information with the director or an approved co-worker who is knowledgeable is this subject as well, so they can offer feedback and help you get ready for your teacher-parent meeting. Finally, be ready to offer local referrals that can help the kid and parents find solutions.

Through observation and documentation, childcare providers learn children individualized needs and help childcare programs keep a record of children development. Typically, children can achieve milestones at different times within a certain range and it is consider normal development. So by observing kids in the classroom, we learn if that particular child is achieving his/her milestones, if we need to plan the curriculum differently for them to get there, or red flags that we need to pay attention to in order to help the child.

I believe screen time is not necessary in a childcare environment. I believe that hand on activities like crafts, coloring and playing are more beneficial for kids on this age group.

In the case of young toddlers, early learning providers can help them clean up after spilling crumbs. By doing this, children will learned the basics of doing the cleaning themselves but also know that you are there in case they need help. They will learn to trust you how a reliable person to help them.

I will calmly remind the parent about our pick up policy and the need to be on time. I will ask the parent about the reason to the frequent tardiness. I will remain empathetic, but I also will be firm about the need to be punctual in the future or extra charges will be applied.

Section 100-300-0160 states that:

(1) An early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. A provider must use equipment and materials that include, but are not limited to:

(a) Diverse dolls, books, pictures, games, or materials that do not reinforce stereotypes;

(b) Diverse music from many cultures in children’s primary languages; and

(c) A balance of different ethnic and cultural groups, ages, abilities, family styles, and genders.

WACs remarks on the importance of inclusion. It is vital for children coming from diverse background to feel comfortable and welcome in their new environment. Teachers and aides have the responsibility to make these children and families to feel at ease as much as possible. By making the children feel a sense of familiarity in the daily activities and class curriculum, wether that is through music in their native language, a book about their country or culture, dolls that represent their identity, etc.

1. A multicultural education curriculum should be in place in every school. Strongly agree.
2. Families should not be expected to be involved in classroom activities. Strongly disagree. I think it is important for families to participate or volunteer in their children classroom when there are opportunities to do so. I have done so in the past, and my children often comment of how much they enjoy having me there helping with activities.
3. All learning programs should accommodate all children with special needs. I disagree mostly because I think teachers and aides need to have specialized training and the means to do so.
4. Some extended family members may confuse children, so they should not have a voice in raising or educating the child. Strongly disagree. I was raised by a multigenerational household and my life was completely enriched with the opportunity to learn from different generations.
5. My curriculum should be based on each individual child’s current interests. Agree
6. Diversity definitely includes race and culture, but doesn’t include age, ability or family make-up. Strongly disagree.
7. Media in general delivers fair and accurate accounts of events around the country. Strongly disagree
8. The United States should discontinue relations with countries that engage in human rights violations. This one was tough because the ethical thing will be to stop any relations with these countries. However, I am originally from a country with a repressive government. I have been a spectator of how family and friends suffered the consequences of these actions. When these human right violating countries become isolated from other countries that do not share the government values, the majority of the population and the most in need are the ones to pay the price of this rupture; Economy crumbles, so poverty and human right violations increase exponentially. So is it breaking relationship with a Government who violates human rights the best solution? Should we find other ways to stop these countries for their human right violations(Diplomacy dialogue and warning..maybe)?
