I turn on a cleaning song for kids so they know when I tell them “ok, it’s time to clean up our toys so we can have lunch.” I turn on the cleaning song and then I ask if they can help me and we will lay out bins and throw the toys into their bins. Children love when you turn it into a game. And they love games. I turn on dance freeze to get them to move around and it includes dancing, twirling, skipping, jumping and more. We also do yoga poses when the weather isn’t good to get them up and moving.

The biggest worry I have about keeping children safe is if there were to be an intruder. Especially, one armed with a dangerous weapon. I would be scared if that happened and it is also a lot of pressure to make sure that I remain calm in emergencies because the children can sense my emotions and will feel scared and probably start crying. That has always been my biggest fear when I was in school and now I work in a school.

I think it is important to learn about each child and their likes/dislikes and needs. Learning about every child can help you lesson plan because then you have an idea of what they are interested in and you can make lesson plans and modify them how you think they would like to learn based off of your observations of the children.

Involving the children in the routine planning could be very helpful to teachers. It is much easier to get children to do something when they have interest in what they are doing or if they know they get rewarded and/or praised for doing a good job or if they helped plan some of the activities.

A classroom should be warm and welcoming to the students and it should be an environment where they can see everything and explore. Students should know where they can find certain things to play with, know where to locate their personal belongings and a place where they can relax and read a book or have quiet time by themselves away from a noisy environment.

Some good ways to approach a parent to talk about such sensitive topics could be; practice with a coworker about how you would approach the parents, have a list of your observations and a list of resources or at least one resource for the parents to use. Be clear about what their child is struggling with and also go into conversation with compassion and care because it can be a sensitive topic.

Observing and documenting helps teachers gather information about each child and therefore, we can respond rather than react to situations. It also helps us better understand the child and their struggle so that we as their teacher can maybe teach them the same thing as everyone else but with more guidance and we can help walk them through what to do and help them better understand what we are learning.
