1. What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity?

I learned of the different components that make up the Washington Administrative Codes. This includes the training required for employees within childcare facilities, when training is required by, the definitions of different childcare related vocabulary, legalities related to storing student records, licensing requirement for childcares, and more.

2. Were you surprised by any of the WACs?

I would not say I was surprised by any of them, but instead they broadened my understanding of the legalities related to being a childcare facility employee and those required for childcare facilities to run. For example, I knew that student records needed to be stored for a set amount of time but was unaware that this time frame is a minimum of three years.

3. Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in care for children? Why or why not?

After completing this activity, I can see how familiarity with the common WACs can be beneficial. While it is impossible to memorize every single one, it is important to be familiar with the in order to meet the legal standards and expectations for childcare centers as set by the state. Additionally, if a parent was to ask me why I do what I do and the legal rules our center has to follow, I would be able to share these codes with them.

I didn’t discover much. I don’t comprehend text very well. These were to wordy and hard to understand in my opinion.

I learnt quite a bit of information reading others responses on this thread and was able to pick up on more information than I could reading WAC. Upon reading I could relate to a lot of the responses and understand the impact others had.

I was definetly surprised by several WACs, so much so that i had to read them several times to really understand what i was reading.

1. I love how each WAC is explained down to the very last detail. They are easy to understand and I feel like even a childcare provider just starting out will be able to understand.

It was very detailed book and everything given in that book regarding Early learning program has so much depth and valuable information. If you are an Early child care program employee, this will be the book to refer any questions regarding licensing, staffing, health, safety, nutrition, agency practices etc., This is a great resource.

1. I discovered that WACS are very detailed, which provides a lot of information to any question or problem you might run into. Seems to be a wealth of knowledge, rightfully so, considering you are working with people’s children.

2. I thought the information regarding Center Directors/Assistant Directors credit hours per the number of children the center is licensed to have was interesting. Also assistant teachers can act as a substitute teacher up to two weeks before the provider must notify the department of future plans for the classroom.

3. Because of the seriousness of providing care to other people’s children in a safe and professional environment, adhering to the WACS on a day-to-day basis is vital. It is not only an asset to you as a worker, but also the families that trust their children in your care.

1.) I discovered that the WAC policies are very detailed and thought out. There is a policy for so many different situations that could occur in a childcare center and these policies will keep everyone safe, healthy and thriving.

2.) The WACs policies that surprised me most were the one addressing animals in the center, water testing, lead and arsenic testing, TB test requirement and many more. Many of these things had never crossed my mind as something I would need to complete as a Daycare provider but it makes complete sense once you understand why you must complete these items and follow these policies.

3.) I can definitely see how the WACs will influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children because I know that there are specific guidelines/policies I must follow to keep the children safe, healthy and happy. There is no guessing if I’m doing things right or wrong because I have learned so much information and safety practices/rules from the WAC that better prepare me and make me a more confident provider.

1. I learned that there are a lot of requirements that need to be followed in order to be compliant with the standards for Washington State. It makes me curious to see how many requirements there are for other states.

   Physical restraint must only be used if a child’s
   safety or the safety of others is threatened, This WAC did surprise me just a bit because I did not know that this was allowed.

   WACs influence the day-to-day structure of your day depending on what is going on there are steps in place for you to follow and stay in accordance with to keep everyone safe, healthy, and learning in a positive environment.
