What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity?

While I was working with the WACs for this Handout B-2 activity it opened my eyes to the various responsibilities for not only educators in child care but for the centers /programs we work in. Although a lot to take in when reading I do appreciate how the WACs are set out as it helps us teachers to locate the information we may need to refresh on.

Were you surprised by any of the WACs?

    WAC 110-300-0100 and WAC 110-300- 0107

I have been working in child care for 6 years but just in a different country and I have never read so many documents as I have in Washington state. The WACs are fairly standard most child care centers/programs would work with these guidelines. The one that stands out to me the most would be the qualification updates and the expiration and education continuation that needs to be done.

Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not?

Yes, I can see how the WACs will influence my day to day as it sets a standard along with guidelines to follow. If anything throughout the day happens that is either a common occurrence or not all staff including myself have something to reference to aid or remind us of how to handle situations and what should or could be done.

Even though that surprised me I do think it is a good idea and like the idea that qualifications are maintained by the state so that staff are reminded and given access to relevant information and tools they are using on a daily basis.

I discovered the WACs requirements to be completed in Washington state for early child care and education. I have been in care for many years and am fairly familiar with laws and regulations so I was not surprised by any WACs. I can see how the WACs will influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children due to the fact I must follow the laws and regulations.

    1. While completing the activity, I discovered that the WACs are comprehensive and detailed, covering a wide range of aspects related to early learning programs. They provide clear guidelines on the responsibilities and requirements for early learning providers, from training and qualifications to health and safety standards.
    2. I wouldn’t say I was surprised by any of the WACs, because they all seem to be designed with the best interests of the children and the professionals in mind. However, the level of detail and thoughtfulness in the codes is impressive.
    3. As for how the WACs will influence day-to-day practice, they certainly play a significant role. They provide a framework for maintaining high standards of care and education for children. For example, the codes related to health and safety ensure that the environment is safe and conducive to learning. The record-keeping requirements help maintain transparency and accountability, etc.

I discovered that the WACs are extremely detailed.

2.) I was shocked just how in-depth the WACs go in dictating the entire operations of an early learning center.

3.) I think it’s extremely helpful to use the WACs as the go to for taking the guess work out of finding the best care practices and also enables me as an educator to be assured I am following the guidelines prescribed.

    2. Not really. It is great to see that Washington cares so much about keeping children safe in our care.
    3. The WACs govern how we must care for children so they directly influence everything we do. They are there to make sure we are creating a safe and secure environment for children to learn and grow.

1.-Now I have learned that it is very important to be familiar with the WAC because sometimes you can’t imagine that a small incident in the classroom could make you a lost a license.

2.- The WAC that surprised me is 110-300-0335 where it says that the physical restrictions should only be used if the safety of a child and other is threatened.

3.- Yes, because implementing these regulations helps you to develop and carry out more professional, safe and healthy practices in the classroom.

    1. What I discovered about WACs was seeing how detailed and informing it is after reading through them you are able to get a clear idea of the information that is being listed it shows you the steps that need to be followed and required for Washington State

    2. I was surprised by pets and animals I didn’t know that class pets were even allowed and the types of animals that were being listed that could be in the classroom they gave examples such as chickens, ducks, dove, pigeon’s, or other caged birds this got my attention that these animals were even allowed in a classroom with children being around and all the matinees that the animals alone would need for even being around the children and being in the classroom

    3. How the WACs can influence my day to day practice in caring in children it informs me about all the steps as a staff that need to be followed and required it talks about every detail that is expected from hazards and safety in a classroom to Learning development and many more topics that is expecting when being with the children the WACs covers many things this can be important to refer to daily as a helpful guide in childcare

    1. WACs are all very specific rules required of childcare providers and there are so many of them, sometimes varying slightly depending on the specific service provided.
    2. At first I was surprised about the definitions of different sexualities and gender being provided in the WACs until I remembered this applied to providers for children up to the age of 12, not just children under the age 5 or 6.
    3. The WACs would influence what I can do for the children and how I am supposed to do it. However, the sections regarding administration would likely not affect me.

1.) There are many outlines rules that provide a broad range of guidance for most all situations.

2.) I don’t know that I was surprised by any of the WACs except for the ones that provided actual definitions to verbiage and terms used on a day to day basis (WAC 110-300-0005). I found it impressive these have all been broken down into a concise, black and white explanation to ensure the meaning in our communications is universal.

3.) Absolutely. It is a strong reminder that each individual is responsible for what they do. We are all held accountable and we must keep ourselves informed and educated in alliance with WAC rules and guidelines.

    3. These are important to know so that we can implement them in our day to day lives working with children

1: I discovered that everything was easy to understand and well detailed.

2: I was surprised by how in depth they were but not necessarily surprised by the amount of standards in place as they are important for the safety and wellbeing of the children.

3: I can very much see how these could influence my day to day practice because they help us to make sure we are caring for children in a safe way.
