Screen time in childcare

MemberNovember 6, 2023 at 2:00 amIt’s a tough balance between not having screen time, but also helping children to be able to use technology properly. I am also curious if there are studies connecting early and frequent screen use to ADHD.

There is no strong evidence that screen time is actually beneficial for young children. So no need to do it, if parents want to do it at home that is their call but it is not necessary at school.
-
I think screen time should be limited in childcare. As it shows in research, screen time has a negative effect on children, including loss of vocabulary. Therefore, child care should focus more on live interactions and play.

I don;t agree with any screens in childcare. Children learn by touching and doing things with real objects. Screens are the lest effective way for a child to retain or understand information.

TV thinks for them and they don’t have the change to experience new activities if they learn at a young age to be in front of a screen. Once they get older, I think its ok in moderation, not hours and hours. Also limiting what they are able to watch is good for them as well. Kids need to learn how to live life, how to sit in a restaurant and be respectful. They need to learn how to interact with others not the TV.

MemberNovember 13, 2023 at 3:08 pmI think screen-time can be a great tool to implement from time to time. It can even serve as an incentive or a way to decompress. However, we do not permit the use of personal electronics. The way we implement screen-time is by offering a movie on early -release days and we actively work toward a movie party around major holidays. It works because the students are working (by doing good deeds, following rules, and having positive interactions) to gain the movie party (and the other activities such as special snacks and games).

For older kids i think every now and then an education video would be helpful and fun to keep older kids engaged.

Depending on the child’s age group, I think it’s very functional, because through simulation we can cover the content in a fixed way in cognitive action.

In the contemporary era, the prevalence of screen time has become commonplace, often serving as a customary means for parents to catch a break while their children are engrossed in television or other digital devices. While this practice offers a momentary respite, I believe that excessive screen time can have detrimental effects. Implementing reasonable restrictions on screen time for young children not only provides adults with a break but also ensures that children develop crucial social skills, learning how to engage and interact with their peers. It is essential to strike a balance, allowing children the freedom to be children rather than becoming overly dependent on screens.

I believe that screentime shouldn’t be used at a child care center with how widely screen time is used and accepted by parents in the home.

Almost every child gets screen time at home, and the classroom should be a space to explore the world around them, not just watch a screen. Our job as educators is to make the space more inviting than what they might watch on a screen.

MemberNovember 24, 2023 at 5:04 amI think during early years in like (around the first 8) its very important for kids to learn to interact with the real world and other people and i doing think that technology has a good way of doing that. but at some point in their later school life they will have to learn how to use the tool technology offers. i think finding out how to interduce them to technology later in their life is just as important as teaching them how to live a full life without technology early on.

I have mixed feelings on screen time because I feel as though in this generation, technology is extremely important. Some toddlers know how to work an iphone which is indicative of the time they spend on screens, but is also quite impressive.
In childcare, screen time should be rare since it might be inevitable at home. Although, Ipads are a staple in modern kindergarten classrooms these days. This is why I have mixed feelings on screen time at childcare.
