Screen time in childcare
-
Cassandra Davidson
MemberNovember 24, 2023 at 11:03 pmMy feel that children should be taught through hands on activities. I personally have used screen time when I raised my kids so I could get something done, but did try to limit it. My childcare provider never used screen time in her Daycare and I liked that, everything was very hands on, my kids needed that outlet 24/7.

Screens also account for a lot of things such as attention span, keeping everyone happy, etc and I think that doesn’t prepare kids for making real decisions or navigating real life that is much less comfortable or amusing or fast paced.

But where you draw the line be debatable taking into account individual’s culture and upbringing. Currently my day care practices zero screen-time for children under 4years and 10 mins of educational games per day for Pre-K children. Which is very age appropriate in my opinion

MemberNovember 27, 2023 at 3:53 amI believe that screen time should not be used in childcare. It is much more beneficial for a child to play with different toys and explore different shapes, colors, and objects. It is also good for them to interact with other children and adults. Children spending time in front of screens are more likely to be overweight, fearful, and aggressive. These don’t lead to a good happy life, therefore I believe that screen time should be limited or not used in a childcare setting. Instead, we should provide activities for children to do.

I think screen time is a big no no for lots of reasons. Main reason is time and time again research has proven it’s not healthy for kids and their developing brains. Second reason parents would be upset if they aren’t shows that they approve of. Most parents are paying for some type of education when they send their kids to daycare and preschool. If they’re just going to watch tv why not stay with grandma? Alternative options should be music, dance, playing musical instruments, etc.

MemberDecember 4, 2023 at 9:13 pmScreen time can be tempting to give children because of how reliant we are on them for are daily lives and because sometimes when you don’t have the energy or time to give to children it is an easy way to keep them occupied. I however do not think young children should have more than maybe 30-40mins of screen time if any. I think there are much better things for children to be doing that will keep them occupied and learning. I think music is a great alternative, especially having dance parties with friends. I believe that if you do decide to allow children screen time you should be very selective of what they are allowed to watch. I do think that parents should be the ones to make these decisions. I do not think the classroom is a place that should offer screens though. Unless it is older children working on a computer for their school work.

MemberDecember 7, 2023 at 8:50 amI have a family member who is an up and coming teenager raised iPad baby, so my thoughts on screen time for children are very strong in the anti-category. Except when it comes to movies/documentaries/appropriately aged news sources. I remember watching The World to A from Z with Carl Azuz one day a week in fourth grade and I felt so special. On rainy days or days before breaks, taking it easy in a class and watching a movie was sometimes a very special treat. Special treat with emphasis, very infrequent.

I believe it’s crucial to strike the right balance when it comes to screen time for children in childcare. While technology can offer educational benefits, I’m cautious about excessive screen exposure affecting overall development. As childcare providers, we should prioritize age-appropriate and supervised screen activities, ensuring they contribute positively to learning. Emphasizing interactive, hands-on experiences is key for fostering social, emotional, and cognitive growth in children.

Screen time is not a healthy way for them to be able to learn. They’ll remember more when you’re interaction with them. play a song and dance with them, playing a game during circle time. Doing a art project and have some music in the back around. During the day when they’re in our care wee want to be teaching them and caring for them. Some parents let their children that’s fine that’s on their time. But I think it’s best they don’t watch the screen during daycare.

MemberDecember 11, 2023 at 6:00 amWhile educational content can have its benefits, it’s important to follow the guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatrics. For children two and younger, it’s recommended to avoid screen time altogether. For older children, limiting screen time to 1-2 hours per day is advised. Balancing screen activities with other hands-on and interactive learning experiences is the best approach for their overall well-being and development.
