Screen time in childcare

I believe screen time although it should be limited should be apart of a reward system or a fun day that the teacher host for the children and should not be implemented everyday learning practices.

MemberMay 9, 2023 at 5:10 pmI teach art, and reference photos are really important to how I run class. Sometimes I’ll show a short video or display photos on a screen but even better is printed, laminated photos that I can pass around and that the children can touch and inspect as closely as they want. Preparing these take time, which is not always plentiful, but I think the reduction in screen time is worth it.

With children in school using tablets and ipads, I think that healthy, monitored screen time for older preschoolers and all school-agers is key to creating healthy, safe, and responsible online habits. I do not think infants or toddlers should have screen time, however, I do think music and dance time through electronic devices is very important.

I think as children get older, around toddler age things like movies and TV shows are okay in controlled moderation, but there is NO way that I would expose an infant or very young child to video games, cell phones or a computer screen because we all know the damage that blue light has on rest, well being and stress and eye health. In a perfect world we could avoid screentime all together but that’s simply not a possibility.

MemberMay 24, 2023 at 11:47 pmAn hour a day of screen time is not bad for childcare. It would be even better if it were something educational. Screen time is not bad for kids. I believe it allows the children to have some quiet time while learning.

My thoughts on screen time in childcare are to not have it because it is unknown how often it is on at home. It shouldn’t be included in school at all because of what it does to children’s development and brain it can really impact them and there learning.

There really is no place for it. Anything that might come through a screen could be provided through human interaction instead.

MemberMay 31, 2023 at 1:02 amI agree with the standards of having less than the two to one hours a day of screen time. I use the screen technology in class to help show the students pictures of animals, parts of nature, and play instrumental music with the screen off. I use the ‘screen time’ allotted and allowed only to help answer questions that would be better understood with a visual or a question that I need assistance with answering.

Screentime in childcare is not that bad. It can be used as a reward or another way to help children learn new things through educational games. Maybe a designated period for screentime would be okay.
