The WACs promote diversity and encourage early learning programs to include diverse materials so children can have a more well-rounded and diverse learning experience. The WACs also promote communicating with families, to make sure that parents are involved in their child’s education and well-being. Families should feel welcomed in early learning programs.

WAC 110-300-0160 addresses diversity and WAC 110-300-0085 addresses communication and collaboration with families.

The WACs emphasize on the importance of diversity and acceptance and how this is such an important age range to be implanting the importance in your classroom. This is usually the first time children interact with people outside of close friends and family and they are exposed to many different cultures and it should be taken as an opportunity to learn from each other.

WAC 110-300-0160 “Promoting Acceptance of Diversity” indicates that an early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff. Additionally, an early learning provider must intervene appropriately to stop biased behavior displayed by children or adults.

WAC 110-300-0085 “Family Partnerships and Communication” indicates that an early learning provider must communicate with families to identify individual children’s developmental goals. An early learning provider must attempt to obtain information from each child’s family about that child’s developmental, behavioral, health, linguistic, cultural, social, and other relevant information. The provider must make this attempt upon that child’s enrollment and annually thereafter. An early learning provider must determine how the program can best accommodate each child’s individual characteristics, strengths, and needs.

The specific WAC addressing diversity is 110-300-0160. The WAC advises early learning providers to provide culturally and racially diverse early learning opportunities within curriculum, activities, and classroom materials and equipment. The WAC provides examples of this as well.

WAC Chapter 110-300 mentions that we must “maintain an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented in relation to aspects of cultural identity that are most important to the person.” Their message is that diversity and culture must be embraced and accepted within your center. Your behavior must reflect what is said in these codes.

WAC 100-300-0160 code describes diversity among families.

It is important to celebrate not just the sameness for families and children but also what compromises our differences and learning about them for all in equity.

WAC 100-300-160 is about promoting acceptance of diversity, “An early learning provider must provide culturally and racially diverse learning opportunities. Diverse learning opportunities must be demonstrated by the provider’s curriculum, activities, and materials that represent all children, families, and staff”

The big message I get from this WAC code is acceptance regardless of culture and to embrace diversity within your classrooom environment.
