    WAC 110-300-0160
The biggest message is that we all need to respect each other.
We all come from somewhere, and we all have a different story, so respecting that and perhaps showing an interest in what is brought to the table. Acceptance for how you are.

WAC 110-300-0160: promoting acceptance of diversity

WAC 110-300-0085: family partnerships and communication

In my eyes the big message the WAC’s give regarding diversity and collaboration is to find ways to bring everyone together and not let differences between people cause unfairness among any of the children or even the families.

    1. WAC 110-300-0160 addresses accepting diversity in the program, and WAC 110-300-0320 (3) addresses offering culturally responsive activities.

As for collaboration with families WAC 110-300-0085 addresses this.

    2. I think the big messages the WAC’s give are to take time to understand each childs needs/background through communicating, and collaborating with families, as well as using materials from different cultures such as games, music, etc… in order to bring culturally diverse learning, and activities to the program, and help others learn about and accept each culture within.

Another big message I got was to put a stop to stereotyping, and biases in order to maintain that diverse culture within your program.

    1. Washington Administrative Code 110-300-0100: Collaboration with families and communities.

    2. WAC 110-300-0200: Cultural diversity must be respected.

WACs remarks on the importance of inclusion. It is vital for children coming from diverse background to feel comfortable and welcome in their new environment. Teachers and aides have the responsibility to make these children and families to feel at ease as much as possible. By making the children feel a sense of familiarity in the daily activities and class curriculum, wether that is through music in their native language, a book about their country or culture, dolls that represent their identity, etc.

What messages do the WACs convey regarding diversity and collaboration?

It can be difficult for a child to be separated from a parent/ Guardian especially if they’ve never been in child care before. As used in one of the examples a child who speaks a different language at home than at school to the child it can be very scary. Finding a connection to the child I find is important and finding a way to make the child feel comfortable/ comfortable with the teacher they will be spending time with. I feel the WACs discuss in detail about diversity/ collaboration with families and all the differences ones family might have.
