While completing the WAC hunt, I discovered that the WACs are very detailed and cover every aspect of running a child care program from safety and health practices to curriculum and family engagement. I was a little surprised by how specific some rules are, like the exact requirements for sleep and rest areas or cleaning procedures.I can see how the WACs will influence my day-to-day practice because they provide clear guidance on how to care for children safely and effectively. Following the rules helps ensure children’s well-being, supports a consistent learning environment, and protects both staff and the program legally. Overall, the WACs are a helpful tool to guide everyday decisions and actions in the classroom.

MemberSeptember 30, 2025 at 12:11 amWhile going through the WACs, I realized how detailed they are in setting clear standards for child care programs. I wasn’t too surprised they were strict, but I didn’t expect the level of detail in areas like rest time and medication. I can definitely see how these rules shape day-to-day practice because they give structure, keep kids safe, and help us stay professional and consistent in our work.

MemberSeptember 30, 2025 at 2:05 amI discovered with the Child Care and Early Learning Licensing guide being over 400 pages, WACs are very comprehensive. As someone who previously only worked with students in the elementary school setting, I noticed some similarities pertaining to records, confidentiality, and professional development. Most recently coming from the elementary school setting, I was surprised to learn more about how in-home daycares can require licensing, and to learn about toileting and supervised rest periods. I see the WACs influencing my time spent supporting preschool especially within Section 3: Family Engagement and Partnerships. I would love to help families to build upon protective factors including the social and emotional competence of children.

The WAC has many regulations to ensure the well-being and safety of the children. Through reading, I have discovered that the WAC requirements are much more extensive than I had realized. I had already suspected that there would be regulations for safety when playing, sleeping, or mandated reporting of abuse. But there was much more important information I gathered, which said, I was most surprised by how many different tests there are in order to be a child care provider. Yes, I was aware there are trainings required, as well as testing. But before this, I would have thought CPR and first aid. But the training I hadn’t thought of, such as medication management and administration training, or the serving children experiencing homelessness training. This is very eye-opening. The WACs will influence my day-to-day practice in caring for children by using all of the information I gathered to not only provide for the children but to be well aware of their every need, and keep a watchful eye for their safety, both physically and mentally.

What I discovered about the WACs was that they are not just a set of rules but a framework that creates a standard for early childhood teaching. These did not really surprise me as this level of detail is needed to help each day-to-day run the same under the correct standards and expectations.

MemberOctober 7, 2025 at 2:07 amWACs gives very detailed rules for health, safety and learning in childcare. I was kinda surprised by how specific some of the requirements are. The WACs will influence my daily practice because they guide how children are safe and create a quality learning environment.

Yes, I was a bit surprised by how early some regulations apply and how strict certain areas are. For example, I didn’t expect that an infant as young as six weeks could be accepted into care. I was also surprised that ongoing staff training is required every year, even after completing the initial STARS hours. It made me realize that working in child care means serious responsibility and involves continual learning, not just one-time certification. Another surprise was the attention to cultural sensitivity in toilet training, which shows how inclusive and family-centered the regulations are meant to be.
-
Great insights, Yan! Your reflections on the regulations highlight the importance of ongoing learning and inclusivity in child care.

I discovered that there are many different roles involved in early childhood learning programs and that the qualifications for each are distinctive. For example, I did not know that a center aid could be as young as 14 years old or that the education requirements for center directors increase according to the number of children enrolled in their program. After reviewing the WACs for this course, I do think the knowledge I have gained will influence the way I care for children because I will ensure that all I do as a teacher is in alignment with these standards.

Reading the WAC I discovered that it provides a detailed frame for the safety, health and supporting the development of children in a licensed childcare facility. The frame given in this guide doesn’t just give laws for a childcare center and its employees but emphasizes the teaching around early childhood education making it an intentional effort for anyone working with children and their families, being inclusive and engaging with families. These give foundations to ensure that anyone working with children are truly centered around the children and developmentally appropriate. Was I surprised by any of the WACS yes and no, I did not realize how much education and training is needed but also understand why it is. There is a lot of focus around the thought of being an educator, being culturally responsive and inclusive for all children. It is definitely encouraging to see that the standards are designed to protect children while also promoting high quality standards. The WACS have influenced my day-to-day practice and caring for children because it has helped shape my daily routines and the way I enter my place of employment as well as how i set up and operate my daily kitchen duties. I am and have always been intentional about safety, hygiene, supervision and the food and menus I will follow and serve to the children. The WACS also reinforce the importance of working as a team with other staff and maintain he quality care of each child. It also ensures that every decision from how we prepare meals to how we guide behavior is grounded in the best practices that support children’s growth, respect and sense of belonging.
