MemberAugust 16, 2023 at 12:56 amI would bring it up to my lead teacher to see if it is a viable concern because she has been in the classroom for over 20 years. We would then see if we should escalate it to administration, who would then help us contact CPS. Since I work in a toddler class, I’m not sure if directly asking the child will get us any information.

MemberAugust 19, 2023 at 8:05 pmBring this to the lead teacher and discuss this because the safety of the child is our number 1 concern. Although it is difficult between the differences in families and what is seen to be normal in their culture, versus what is normal to someone else, it is still important to protect the child under any circumstance. Contacting CPS would be a viable option as well as police or authorities if this is an immediate/urgent concern.

MemberAugust 20, 2023 at 9:01 pmI would first go to my supervisor to let her know my suspicions and observations. She would likely want to talk to the child to gather more information as well. I would work with my supervisor in contacting CPS and filing a report.

MemberAugust 21, 2023 at 9:18 pmIf I suspected abuse or neglect the first thing I would do is talk to my team about it so they can help observe if they notice it too. I would then take the evidence to my supervisor. The steps to be taken after would be calling CPS.

MemberAugust 22, 2023 at 1:06 amBefore I contact cps I would talk with my lead teachers to see if they see anything wrong with the child’s normal behavior and also tell my director of my suspicion, from there I would document everything I notice and have proof before I contact cps.

I would gather pieces of information that back up my point and ask my coworkers and director their opinion on it. Getting a second opinion can help and can justify how you feel and what that child is feeling. Depending on the situation and relationship with the parent, you could always try talking with them and see if they need help and give resources. Worst case scenario if nothing is improving, then you can anonymously call CPS and put in a tip about the child.

I would ensure that I am taking all of the proper steps to go about suspected child abuse or neglect. Rather than interview the child myself or try to evaluate the situation on my own, I would first contact CPS to interview and investigate in my stead.

MemberAugust 30, 2023 at 11:34 pmWhen abuse or neglect is suspected you must contact CPS if you even suspect that certain injuries or bruises may be accidental. You must contact CPS if you see signs of emotional or sexual abuse or physical neglect. Even if you have made a report to CPS about a particular child earlier, you must report each new injury or incident. As much as we all want to do not attempt to interview the child or to manage the situation yourself. Both interviewing and investigating are the responsibility of CPS.
