MemberSeptember 25, 2023 at 1:40 amSpeed is very important in child abuse cases, not only for the child’s safety but for your legal responsibilities. I would speak to other relevant members of your team -lead teachers, assistant teachers, director- to hear if they have noticed anything. Depending on the center’s policies and who witnessed what, the lead or director may want to place or be present for the call.

MemberSeptember 26, 2023 at 8:20 pmI would start by talking with the children and ask them if they are okay, if anything happened, and so on. It’s important to make sure that the child feels comfortable with you and that they know you care about them because they could struggle with trust. After communicating with the child, I would contact CPS and tell them my observations, what the child has said or shown me, and provide any information CPS would need from me.

Knowing when to report a case of abuse or neglect is a crucial responsibility as a child care provider. I understand that not all forms of abuse involve physical harm, and recognizing signs of emotional, sexual, or physical neglect is essential. If I even suspect that a child may be a victim, I’m committed to contacting CPS promptly. It’s vital not to attempt to manage the situation or interview the child myself, as CPS is responsible for investigating and ensuring the child’s safety. While I understand the importance of confidentiality, I will always prioritize the child’s well-being and follow the mandated reporting procedures outlined in my parent handbook and health policies, without necessarily informing parents in most circumstances. This commitment to reporting and child protection is a fundamental aspect of my role as a child care provider.

MemberSeptember 27, 2023 at 6:15 pmI would first bring it up to my supervisor and ask her if she has noticed the situation as well. Depending on the severity of what was going on, we would decide whether calling CPS or 911 was needed. We would keep this confidential other than contacting authorities.

I would first talk to my supervisor about my observation of signs of child abuse or neglect. Then we can report to CPS.

If I suspected a child is being abused or neglected, I would file a report with CPS, as mandated. I would not attempted to intervene or engage the child in a discussion, I would leave that up to Child Protective Services.

MemberOctober 20, 2023 at 8:25 pmI would do everything in my power to make the situation right, no child deserves to go through abuse and no child deserves to have someone only sorta help them. As a person who grew up in an abusive house hold, what I really needed was for someone to trust me and not try to twist my words. You hear that I feel am being abuse and now do something about that. So, if I were to hear about this from a child or i suspected it I would approach the situation calmly and I would ask the child about their red flags, I wouldn’t ask specific questions, but questions like “I noticed _____, why are those things not okay? and what should we do about it if someone in our lives does those things?. I would consult with my others coworkers and I would devise a plan that keeps the child safe.
