Q1. If you suspect a child is a victim of abuse or neglect, what are your next steps?
A. You must contact CPS if you even suspect that certain injuries or bruises may be accidental. Also, you must contact CPS if you see signs of emotional or sexual abuse or physical neglect.
Even if you have made a report earlier, you must report each new injury or incident.
DO NOT attempt to interview the child or to manage the situation yourself.

MemberNovember 9, 2023 at 1:35 amChilds safety should be the top priority. If i suspect abuse or neglect, I would communicate with the lead teacher to make sure they are aware of my concerns. Make sure to document everything I had suspicions on. then report it to the state. I want to protect the children to the best of my ability.

MemberNovember 12, 2023 at 12:30 amI would first see what kind of abuse is being done to the child, by hearing the child’s speech, is it alarming, or is it normal child speech? Does the child have bruising, or scarring that isn’t just from a simple cut or scrape? Then, depending on that I would call the parents to talk with them. Ask how everything is going at home, and look for hints that could tell me if the parent is lying or telling the truth. I’d then write a report about my findings and let the director know so that the director can let the state know about the situation.

I would contact CPS, talk to my supervisor and also document what was observed/told/learned.

You should talk to the child using their vocabulary in a private place. Then, you should be sure to avoid strong reactions or press for details if the child is not comfortable. Then, suspected abuse or neglect should be reported.

MemberNovember 18, 2023 at 2:23 amIt is important to examine the information and document it. If it is even suspected that child abuse, neglect, or exploitation is happening, it must be reported to CPS.

MemberNovember 18, 2023 at 2:50 amI always want what is best for the children in my care. If I suspect any type of child abuse or neglect I would call CPS immediately to report the case and I would be willing to assist with any information they may need.

I prioritize the principle of putting the child first, so if I were to suspect any signs of child abuse, my initial step would be to inform my supervisor to check if they have observed similar concerns regarding the child. Following that, I would escalate the matter by notifying the head of the school and subsequently contacting Child Protective Services (CPS) to ensure that the appropriate actions are taken to safeguard the child’s well-being. At the same time, documenting everything from when I first spotted the signs to the steps after that.

MemberNovember 22, 2023 at 3:00 amAs a mandated reporter, if I suspect abuse, I would immediately call and report it. I would not discuss it with the family, but would continue to make sure the child is safe, healthy and happy while in my care.
