Think of your class as a whole and individual children when making your schedule. Observe your routines and see where the challenges are, adjust as needed. Have routines that are clear and constant, but also know that you need to stay flexible when working with children and at times it may benefit your class to adjust your schedule at times.

I believe an organized space is important as young children have a strong sense of order. I also think a quite area where they can be alone and quite is important for children who may feel over stimulated or need a rest during the day.

Its a good idea to have your records prepared and ready. Review them first before creating a draft of what you would like to talk about with families. Be empathetic towards the parents and understand it may be difficult for them to hear that their child is struggling. Have (non-judgmental) examples ready to help the parents understand your observations and be ready to provide next steps to help support their child.

The more you observe a child the more you will understand who they are. Then, you will be able to adjust what/how you present information to them. Recording your observations will allow you to go back and see progress or lack of progress which will help inform you again how to move forward. It is also great to have the records in case special services are needed for the child later on.

I don;t agree with any screens in childcare. Children learn by touching and doing things with real objects. Screens are the lest effective way for a child to retain or understand information.

When outside you can observe when the child is looking at something in nature. You can then come up to them and talk to them about what they are seeing. Listen to them and also show enthusiasm.

I would tell her that you understand how hard it can be to have many schedules and try to get everywhere on time, but remind her of the school’s policy on late pick up. Offer her resources for after school care or a well known nanny service that may be able to help her during this time of day.

WAC and diversity: 110-300-0160, 110-300-0320, and 110-300-0325 these sections address diversity and acceptance in the classroom, while 110-300-0085 addresses collaboration and communication with families, including incorporation of diversity.
The big messages are children should feel valued for who they are and where they came from. They should feel like they belong in their classroom/school and they should be represented respected for their culture.

I like to start the year with an “all about me” form for parents to fill out with their children so I can get a general picture of how they like to spend their time and some traditions they may have.
I also stay away from holiday specific celebrations and do more seasonally themed events.

- What did you discover about the WACs while completing the activity? That every section is very in depth and a little overwhelming, but if you read though them carefully you will have a very comprehensive understanding of the rules.
- Were you surprised by any of the WACs? I was a little surprised by all of the info that must be kept in each child’s file (110-300-0460).
- Can you see how the WACs will influence your day-to-day practice in caring for children? Why or why not? I do see that the WACs will impact my day-to-day. It will inform me on what I need to do to be the best, most professional educator I can and also allows me to understand what/why my supervisor asks of me.
