I think that there are so many components to create a good early learning environment. Overall, a clean, safe, nurturing space is key. It is also important to have all work reachable for the children and switching out works often to keep them inspired and engaged in the work they are doing.

This can be a very sensitive topic to bring up with a parent. This is where observation and documenting can be very helpful. When bringing up your concerns with a parent, I would make sure you bring up some positives about their child as well. Then refer to your documentation so that you can say, “I noticed on Wednesday when we did this work….child did not…..” so that they have a specific time and activity where you saw a red flag. Never tell a parent they need to do anything but you could say, it never hurts to have (so and so) check them out and make sure everything is okay and let them know you also want the best for the child and for them to succeed.

Observing and documenting a child’s development can help you understand where that child is at and how you can help them. Documenting this is a great way to keep track of where they are and to see if what you are doing has helped them over time. This can show you how to engage and help them grow developmentally in the classroom by finding work that meets them where they are at developmentally.

I think that children have enough screen time in their homes. There are lots of other ways to refocus children and allow them to relax through song and movement. Screens are not necessary in a school setting.

I work in a Montessori setting so we always show them new work and then let them do it themselves. All the work in the classroom is within their reach so that they are able to grab whatever work interests them.

Explain to her the situation and how it affects the school when she is late and her child is the last one to leave. Set respectful boundaries with the parent so they know where you stand. If you don’t set boundaries then the parent may not take you seriously and will continue to be late. All this can be done in a kind, respectful tone so that no one feels attacked or “in trouble”.

WAC 110-300-0160 addresses diversity and WAC 110-300-0085 addresses family collaboration. I believe the biggest message they are trying to get across is to build trust and have open communication with the families so that as a lead you can support the child and help their development. Working with the families can help with figuring out the best curriculum or activities that will suit the child and make sure they feel safe and understood. It is important that the families know what is going on in the classroom and how you are helping their child.
